President Trump on Thursday said he was allowing commercial fishing in one of the world’s largest ocean reserves, introducing industrial operations for the first time in more than a decade to a vast area of the Pacific dotted with coral atolls and populated by endangered sea turtles and whales.
Mr. Trump issued an executive order opening up the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument, which lies some 750 miles west of Hawaii. President George W. Bush established the monument in 2009 and President Barack Obama expanded it in 2014 to its current area of nearly 500,000 square miles.
A second executive order directed the Commerce Department to loosen regulations that “overly burden America’s commercial fishing, aquaculture, and fish processing industries.” It also asks the Interior Department to conduct a review of all marine monuments and issue recommendations about any that should be opened to commercial fishing.

Even the fish aren't safe.

There are sycophants and then there is Nutlick……………

The point of these places is to have relatively untouched and unfished sections of the ocean so the wildlife have a place to thrive and replenish the fisheries surrounding it.

These people just enjoy slitting the global throat for short term profit.

We don't have enough time or patience for all this "long term thinking" nonsense.

Okay, we have the billionaire, tariff happy, Sec. Commerce there. I was thinking maybe the head of the EPA should be there, but that's Lee Zeldin. Better he's not there.

In March 2025, Zeldin presented what he described as the "largest deregulatory announcement in U.S. history" wherein he reframed the purpose of the EPA towards deregulation and energy production in lieu of public health and environmental protections.[1] Zeldin announced plans to repeal dozens of major environmental regulations, including protections for wetlands, limits on pollution from tailpipes and smokestacks, and the endangerment finding, the legal basis for regulation of greenhouse gases.[1][89] Under Zeldin, the agency announced plans to cut agency jobs, eliminate its scientific research arm, and reduce the EPA's budget by 65%.[90]

Don't read the above if you don't want to throw something really hard.

I was worried about project 2025. What's going on is worse.

We seriously need to restrict the executive order power.

Excellent news!

The only 3 years I took out of restaurants was to run a non profit at the Aquarium of the Pacific to study and promote the consumption of more seafood by fighting against IUU fishing and advancing eco friendly innovative aquaculture projects. It took 15 years but this is the first huge step I’ve seen taken since then. More to come I hope.

Is fishing a new concept for you?

Only Democrats believe the corporate media

They are allowing U.S.-flagged vessels to fish commercially within 50 to 200 nautical miles of the monument’s boundaries. The resources are still protected by way of the Endangered Species Act.

This man is a pile of shit. I’ve said it before, he’s a ****ing virus in a suit. This goes for the entire gop as well. Just walking viruses destroying everything for “profit”.

**** commercial fisherman.

Agreed, but once the executive seizes a power they will never return it. This is another case where Congress passes a law, in this case way back in 1906 to protect small archeological sites. FDR used it to declare larger areas of thousands of acres as "monuments". Carter used it to declare millions of acres off limits...etc. etc. None of this was in accordance with Congresses desire or intent, but so it is.

Aside from a "King" having effectively sole control over the use of "crown" (federal) lands, there is the issue of who uses them. The BLM, for example, has a mission to make all of its lands accessible for multiple uses: recreation, grazing, etc. Other services wish to more heavily restrict or cut off access to their areas.

Trump is now King, so he decides who gets to use what and for what purpose.

THAT is our (stupid) system.
