I find myself wondering how many other classification and declassification systems are out there among the myriad agencies.

You aren't allowed to know because that information is classified.

Trump lacked power to declassify secret nuclear arms document, experts say

This can't be true. An 'extremely credible source' has called my office & told me...

"The very fact that these documents were present at Mar-a-Lago means they couldn’t have been classified," the former president's office stated. "As we can all relate to, everyone ends up having to bring home their work from time to time. American presidents are no different. President Trump, in order to prepare for work the next day, often took documents including classified documents from the Oval Office to the residence.
"He had a standing order that documents removed from the Oval Office and taken into the residence were deemed to be declassified," the statement added. "The power to classify and declassify documents rests solely with the President of the United States. The idea that some paper-pushing bureaucrat, with classification authority delegated BY THE PRESIDENT, needs to approve of declassification is absurd."

The suspicion is that these nuclear arms documents are actually a letter from Obama to Trump and letters from Kim to Trump that mentioned nuclear weapons.

So to think that these are classified secret nuclear arms documents is b*******. Of course it'll be up to Smith to come up with a revelation of what these documents actually are. We'll see if he does that or if he keeps trying to hide what the documents really are and just tell people to trust him.

I won't be holding my breath

From the sounds of it, this whole nuclear secrets classification scheme is required by law, so if it applied to a letter between Obama and Trump or Kim Jong Il and Trump, either they discussed serious nuclear secrets in those letters or the classification system may need redefined so it covers less.

another unknown "expert" opinion piece - nice

Anyone who uses ALLCAPS to emphasise their ARGUMENT should be taken SERIOUSLY.

I did a search for "Trump lacked power to declassify" but didn't find any threads, before I posted this one.

You have got to be kidding posting this kind of crap...the suspicion is, well, that sounds factual to me.

Well, the opinion relies on a key fact to be pertinent. Either atomic secrets require an extra step of declassification or they don’t. Do you know?

None of this makes any difference. The documents belong to the federal government. No matter what the classification level or none, Trump had no right to keep the documents, attempt to hide them, and lie about it.

What I find weirdest about this is that all he had to do to completely avoid legal action by the federal government was return the documents.

I would bet you money that nearly all presidents throughout history have fumbled the classification security a few times at least, and so far as I can tell none of them were charged with anything because they all returned the documents when they were requested.

Since the story was from 13 AUG 22, you would have expected that the whole case would have long since been wrapped up by the production of the memorandum that was circulated to the effect that those documents were "deemed" to be "declassified".

Of course, someone would have explained how "deemed" and "are" mean the same thing and also how returning the documents to the Oval Office was "deemed" to "restore their previous classification" and how everyone else in the entire US government was informed that "Document X is 'declassified' as of this moment and will not be reclassified until Mr. Trump brings it back from Mar-a-Lago - at which point it will resume its prior classified status.".

There's no way that either Obama or Kim would be discussing serious nuclear secrets with Trump in a letter. At the most they would make some oblique mention of nuclear weapons being an issue but nothing more than that.

But Smith doesn't need anything more than that. all he needs is If he can hide it and say there's nuclear secrets in the documents.

We'll see what happens. Will see if the judge makes Smith reveal these documents and we'll see how it goes.

So based on your hunch, Trump should be let off the hook. Nice to know.

You are going to save a lot of prosecutors a lot of time.

No, based on my hunch Smith should be in jail.
