Trump gives Medicare Advantage a big pay boost
Private Medicare plans will get a more than $25 billion increase in federal payments for the 2026 plan year, according to a policy finalized by the Trump administration Monday.

Why it matters: The more than 5% payment bump is an unexpectedly big win for UnitedHealth Group, Humana, CVS Health and Elevance, among other big insurers.

State of play: The final 2026 Medicare Advantage payment rate is significantly higher than what the Biden administration proposed shortly before leaving office.

Given Medicare Advantage’s well-known history of costing the taxpayers more than traditional Medicare and its pattern of questionable-to-fraudulent behavior among participating insurers, culling that boondoggle should be the low-hanging fruit for those concerned about waste, fraud, and abuse.

  • Still, analysts said the difference between the proposed and final payment rates was surprising and far higher than the historical average.
  • "This leads one to believe DOGE does not care about MA," Chris Meekins, managing director at Raymond James, wrote in a client note.

Ah, well. Nevertheless.

Oh well...Libs and Trump haters just can't control their hypocrisy.

"We need to spend more money to help people."

"Why isn't DOGE stopping this waste of taxpayer money."

We need to spend less money on Medicare Advantage to help people.

I don't even know what that means. Maybe you can explain your comment?

It means that Medicare Advantage takes taxpayer money that should be helping beneficiaries and lights it on fire.

Republicans are proud of creating Medicare Advantage. Now some are urging reform amid runaway costs
Republicans in Congress, long an unwavering source of support for privatized Medicare plans, are increasingly calling for reforms amid widespread evidence that health insurers are abusing the system to collect billions of dollars in unwarranted payments.

The rising discontent with Medicare Advantage is especially prevalent within the GOP’s Doctors Caucus, a group of Republican congressmen who have firsthand experience treating patients covered by these plans and, in some cases, have seen how insurers manipulate the program’s rules to increase profits. In Capitol Hill hearing rooms and interviews with STAT, some have sharply criticized insurers’ efforts to make older patients appear as sick as possible to extract more money from Medicare, a practice known as upcoding.

The changing sentiment is also driven by growing frustration over Medicare Advantage plans denying coverage for care, a point Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), chair of the Senate health committee, made during a confirmation hearing last month for Mehmet Oz, who now oversees the program as the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Republicans’ urgent need for budget savings to pay for massive tax cuts pushed by President Trump also could make Medicare Advantage a target — as its members cost the government billions more than if they were covered by traditional Medicare.

The fact that Medicare Advantage incentivizes upcoding has been recognized for almost two decades, and Democrats in Congress have long pressed for an overhaul of the $500 billion program. But the increasing buy-in from Republicans lends bipartisan support to those efforts and represents a major shift in the politics surrounding the program, which has been fiercely protected by GOP lawmakers since its initial creation in the late 1990s and a subsequent modernization passed under former President George W. Bush. Republicans argued that allowing private insurers to cover patients with the government’s money would cut costs and produce better outcomes for patients.

Called it!

LOL, as if Trump doesn't plan on farming out the work to one of his cronies.
He would be able to say he reduced Federal payroll by X% and then conveniently ignore the amount he is paying his private contractor buddies.

Boosting payments that benefit Medicare Advantage customers and taking steps to eliminate the fraud, waste and abuse on the part of Medicare Advantage providers is not mutually exclusive.

In other words, both are worthy goals of Republican politicians.

Giving it more money is eliminating fraud and waste?

To anyone with common sense, it's a reward from the Trump administration for support and donations.

Do you think everyone with a Medicare Advantage Plan is a Trump supporter?

Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) approves of this additional money for Medicare Advantage programs.

WW
Giving money to billionaires like Scott. Is anyone surprised?

How does giving tax dollars to for-profit private insurance companies help taxpayers and beneficiaries?

Given that the Trump administration is doing neither, I suppose not.

Meanwhile, he’s plowing more taxpayer dollars into a program rife with waste, fraud, and abuse.

Maybe they hold stock in these companies!

Health Insurer Stocks Soar on Medicare Rate Boost
Health insurer stocks soared on Tuesday because the Trump administration said it would substantially increase payment rates for Medicare insurers next year, generating more than $25 billion in additional revenue for the industry and doubling the boost proposed in January.

The news led to a rally in the shares of big Medicare insurers such as UnitedHealth Group, Humana and CVS Health, parent of Aetna. Shares in UnitedHealth rose 8% in morning trading, while Humana was up more than 11% and CVS increased 9.5%.

All the funny stuff aside. (Which I engage in as much as anyone else.)

Medical costs rise, Medicare Advantage plans cover the costs associated with care for the elderly. So allocating funds to cover the increases isn't unreasonable.

From the OP's article...

"After two years of Medicare Advantage cuts, this payment rate will provide stability for millions of beneficiaries who have faced plan closures, higher costs, and reduced benefits.

Because the for-profit companies weren't making enough profit for it to be worth their while! This benefits shareholders, not beneficiaries. Sheesh.

Your article disagrees with you.

Having more choices of Medicare Advantage plans is a benefit for everyone who needs such a plan.

The increases are to satisfy shareholders. The companies have a fiduciary responsibility to the shareholders not to the beneficiaries.

Private healthcare companies are just like any big business. There is no telling what they promised Trump and company to get this accomplished.

There aren't more choices, this was to preserve the current choices.
The healthcare stocks went up after this announcement. What more proof do you need that it's a benefit to their shareholders?

Devil is in the details.

Just another “Sounds good…If you don’t think about it.” from republicans.

Will it result in increased/improved services or just dividends for shareholders.
