Not a surprise at all. I said this would happen.US President Donald Trump has postponed the introduction of higher tariffs on Chinese goods until October 15 on the request of China’s vice premier and as a “gesture of good will”.
Mr Trump said in two*tweets on Wednesday evening that the increase in tariffs on $250bn worth of Chinese goods originally scheduled for October 1 would be pushed back as the original date coincides with the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.
He said that vice-premier Liu He had made the request to delay that date from which the higher tariffs would be imposed. Tariffs on Chinese imports were set to increase to 30 per cent from 25 per cent.*
China’s offshore renminbi strengthened 0.2 per cent versus the dollar in response to the tweet and S&P 500 futures jumped 0.5 per cent.
The move by the US president follows a*gesture by China on Wednesday to exempt 16 types of US goods from import tariffs ahead of the latest round of talks.

Trump has to get whatever he can from China, he can't keep the trade war going, as it's hurting his approval numbers bigtime, and scaring the hell out of Wall St.
Regardless of how things go when the trade teams meet next month, Trump will spin the meeting as great news, even if no progress is made on the important differences, and use his headline to delay this new October 15th tariff deadline, and then back away further from the trade war he started.
China is giving him an exit ramp and he's taking it.
I think this is a strategic mistake from China.
I would think they would want to turn up the fire on this war to get Trump knocked out next year.

The trade war is hurting both sides. China's interests is not taking an economic toll due to Trump's stupidity. They'd like to screw Trump but not at the expensive of their economy.I think this is a strategic mistake from China.

They don't want the trade war anymore than we do and if giving Trump a face saving measure de-escalates it, then that's what they'll do.I think this is a strategic mistake from China.

We must divorce economically from China and have a much more adversarial/confrontational tone with them. The Chinese government is akin to the modern day Nazi's of our time and we have a moral obligation to oppose the regime, not to mention they also threaten our national security (and moreso our allies).
This should be done even if it causes some economic pain.
Last I heard, Trump was at 35% approval with independents.Last I heard, Trump was at 90% approval among republicans. Did this change?
Have you checked ‘country of origin’ of many of the products that end up in your household?
Yes, and over time we need to shift production to countries like Mexico, Vietnam, India, etc. It won't happen overnight but supply chains are already starting to move now.
One of Trumps lines is that, “many companies are moving out of China,”; do you have any examples?
It will take time, I'm not saying the shift has occurred yet but that it needs to occur and some business have moved or are considering moving production out of China.
More than 50 companies reportedly pull production out of China due to trade war
More U.S. Companies Seen Leaving China After September
I honestly believe the government of China is one of the most evil forces in the world and is likely going to start WW3. I think for moral and national security reasons we need to enter into a new cold war of sorts with China to cripple their economy and destabilize the country leading to regime change. We must not make the same historical mistakes made by appeasing the Nazi's and not reacting until they felt strong enough to attack Poland. To be brutally honest, I care less about how China rapes US companies and takes advantage of our economy and I care more about them being a majorly hostile world power that threatens peace and global world order.
My opinion is that the US whiffed on the chance to get on the right side of, not only China, but many other regimes, post WW2. Our economy has Walmarted ourselves into trying to find the cheapest widget, that the consumer is responsible for driving production offshore. Maybe we can fix the situation, I’m not an optimist..
Then he’s sure to get the nomination. But one can’t win on Republican votes alone. Mr. Trump is experiencing the potential erosion among the non-college-educated white women he is counting on as a core constituency. Those women gave Mr. Trump a 27-point margin over Hillary Clinton in 2016. Yet in a recent Fox News poll, Mr. Trump was beating former Vice President Joe Biden by just four points in that group.Last I heard, Trump was at 90% approval among republicans. Did this change?

It may not be a mistake from China. The Chinese see Trump as being weak and they probably figure that he will be useful to them in the long term.

Trade wars are not, "good and easy to win."
