his lawyers admit his unpopularity is hurting business

Profits at the hotel fell from $16.7 million to just $1.8 million from 2015 to 2018, according to documents filed with Cook County and published by The Washington Post.

It also struggled despite a steady stream of business from Republican lawmakers, the Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign, who have all spent millions at Trump properties since he took office. Trump’s Chicago hotel was paid about $100,000 for a Trump campaign fundraiser last month, a Republican official told the Post.

Trump’s lawyers filed the document obtained by the outlet in a bid to lower the property’s taxes. The lawyers said that the profits fell as a reaction to Trump’s politics. “Then the Embarrassment came,” an investor told the Post of Trump’s presidential bid. Trump’s lawyers cited the quote in the documents.

So his unpopularity is hurting his business? How does that square with the emoluments charges related to Doral and Scotland?

This is Donald Trump looking at the cold hard financial reality, that his name drags down the value of properties he controls,” journalist Tim O’Brien, the author of “TrumpNation,” told the Post. “And that — with his political prospects in question over the next year and a half — he understands that it means his financial prospects are in question.”

It has nothing to do with it. If it's illegal for you to take foreign money, then it's still illegal even if your personal business goes down hill after winning an election. It's like saying it's ok to donate money over the legal limit to a politician if they are having a very hard time raising money. That doesn't make it legal.

If there is any justice in the world the family will leave power heading into bankruptcy and prison time.

Strange when the greatest President evah loses business in the greatest economy ever.

Apparently Trump's devoted political base is different than his hotel business base.

These are the kind of excuses that republicans are reduced to.

Hell yeah it hurts business. THe people with money to splurge in the big cities like NYC and Chicago won't step foot in that ****head's fleebag hotel, and his supporters are too poor to afford staying there.

This was predictable, btw.

Michael Cohen said that Trump claims lower profits for tax purposes and exaggerates his wealth to increase his status. I don't believe anything he says without corroboration. If profits actually are down it serves him right.

Emoluments violations are directly tied to his $300k handout from Saudi Arabia and the subsequent arms deals he brokered. Additionally, his kids are making tens of millions and getting patents they shouldn't be getting.

But.....

BIDEN!

It squares because these violations seem to be the only thing keeping several of his business ventures afloat.

It doesn't of course. Anyone who thinks that becoming POTUS increases Trump's wealth, is simply dopey.

Staying in a ****hole is exactly what those currying favor would do. A bribe is not overpaying for things you you want. A bribe is paying a ****ton of money for something you do not want. :doh

Two comments:

1] I wouldn't doubt if Trump's D.C. hotel is on the selling-block due to them wanting to get out while the market value is high.

2] I was extremely disappointed when Chicago didn't follow through on removing Trump's garish neon marque from the building, as was planned when he won the election.

The mango marmot needs to get foreign entities to bribe him through that hotel before it goes under

Why do you think he wanted the G7 at Doral and why did he change his mind?

Maybe I have a hard time with this due to my business background but I find it really hard to reconcile doing something that loses you money with receiving a financial benefit.

He's trying to gain business for unpopular properties.

The article clearly states that the property is unpopular because he's president. If business dropped off more than 80% because he's president he's damned sure not "enriching" himself through use of his office. That kind of drop off is pretty much the opposite of "enriching".

We’ve come a long way from Carter giving up his business when he became president, but it does not make it right. I wonder if the emoluments claim will be played out before Trump is out of office in 2020 or 2024.

When you have a couple go into the White House with a net worth of less than a million dollars in 1992 and end up with a net worth of more than $200 million in 2017 one might wonder exactly how the "emoluments" thing works for people that have only ever been in politics.
