In the Oval Office on Wednesday, President Trump positioned himself as the savior of white South Africans.

Sitting alongside Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa, Mr. Trump said white people were “being executed.” He referred over and over again to “dead white people.” He dressed down Mr. Ramaphosa, who helped his country cast off the racist policies of apartheid, and questioned why he was not doing more when white people were being killed.

“I don’t know how you explain that,” Mr. Trump said. “How do you explain that?”

The American president was not much interested in the answer, which is that police statistics do not show that white people are more vulnerable to violent crime than other people in South Africa.

The confrontation provided a vivid demonstration of Mr. Trump’s views on race, which have animated his political life going back years. After rising to power in part by framing himself as a protector of white America, Mr. Trump has used his platform, in this case the Oval Office, to elevate claims of white grievance.

For Mr. Trump, white people are the true victims; Black people and minorities have received an unfair advantage in the United States.
And when Mr. Trump looks to South Africa, a majority-Black country emerging from a legacy of apartheid and colonialism, he sees white people who need sanctuary in the United States....

It's incredible that this crap is being bandied about and believed.....AGAIN. This was the mindset that pervaded my childhood in Cincinnati, which was a city deeply-divided by race and by racism. For decades now, Republicans have stoked fears about Black Americans. I've watched with amazement their recent complaints that Whites are the real victims in American society.

Now, the President of the United States is openly lying about the hard times experienced by White Afrikaners in South Africa. And he's accorded them refugee status, at the same time he's forcing real, true-life refugees to be sent back to real, true-life danger, hardship, perhaps even death.

I don't know that there's any coming back from this self-deception, this dishonesty.

When the distance between what is said and what is known to be true has become an abyss. Everyone knows there is no persecution of whites in South Africa, but they still happily parrot the narrative out of fear. Nothing is true and everything is possible.

The best thing about the refugee program from South Africa is that you don't even have to provide any evidence of persecution. Just sign up and if you're lucky, the US taxpayer will even pay for you to come on a free plane ride. Then you can sign up for government assistance while Trump tries to kick Americans off of Medicaid, Medicare, and the ACA.

White south Africans are now victims. Whoda' thunk it?
