President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday banning all federal funding for "dangerous" gain-of-function research in China, Iran and other countries and blocking all federal funding for foreign research that could cause another pandemic.

The president signed the order Monday afternoon to improve the safety and security of biological research in the U.S. and around the world.

The White House said the order "will drastically reduce the potential for lab-related incidents involving gain-of-function research, like that conducted on bat coronaviruses in China by the EcoHealth Alliance and Wuhan Institute of Virology."

It's a good step, but what he really needs to do is reinstate the ban on gain-of-function research in *this* country. Don't just yank funding, ban it entirely. We had a three year ban until 2017; let's do that again.

Typically, yes, but Wuhan was not a typical lab. It had a reputation for two things. First, for not following safety protocols. Second, for using coronavirus to create chimeras that would never occur in nature and testing them on humanized mice. That lab was and is a case study in what not to do with research funding.

Gain of function research generally is an ethical rabbit hole that risks causing the very thing it’s intended to prevent even when the researchers have the best of intentions. IMO we’re better off not playing with fire.

Gain-of-function research was banned during Obama's second term, from 2014 to 2017, until the policy was reversed by one Donald J Trump. However, you are correct that Biden should have cleaned up Trump's mess and failed to do so. I'm happy we are finally cracking down on gain-of-function research again after 8 years of inaction.
