Trump administration to add $100,000 fee for H-1B visas

The Trump administration is adding $100,000 to the existing fee for H-1B visa applications, taking aim at a program that is used to attract highly skilled workers to the U.S.

President Trump signed a proclamation late Friday adding the new visa application fee and barring H-1B workers from entering the U.S. unless they had made the $100,000 payment.

"We're going to be able to keep people in our country that are going to be very productive people, and in many cases these companies are going to pay a lot of money for that, and they're very happy about it," Mr. Trump said.

White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson clarified to CBS News in an email Saturday that the fee "does not apply to anyone who has a current visa," and "only applies to future applicants in the February [2026] lottery who are currently outside the U.S. It does not apply to anyone who participated in the 2025 lottery."

Traitorous thief Trump is now raping tech companies.

Read the fine print. He can waive the "fee."

This is a grift. Also, a means for well-connected tech bros to hobble their competitors. This is straight corruption and fascism. It is not in any way a means to rationalize our immigration policy and guest worker programs.

More reason for Meta's owner to serve hard time at ADX Florence.

I wonder how this will affect my own workplace.

No one knows for sure. Reducing the supply of foreign skilled labor means the domestic worker supply becomes more valuable. That scarcity can drive up wages. However some companies might just offshore more work. I would say the more skilled you are the more this will benefit you. But it definitely hurts the country as a whole.

I'll be asking under the table about what it means for us.

I read it was a fee for an application, not even a visa. If the company or the applicant are not pure-as-the-driven-snow MAGA, this sounds like a very bad bet.

Only a Globalist sympathizer would think that.

Gonna be funny as hell when Peter Thiel and Elon Musk take over your party in 2028. They have the money and the connections, and Trump is a senile joke who is fading fast. Bannon, Miller, and Sundance better find their next MAGA warrior fast, cause they only got 3 years (actually less) :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:. That or run the 82 year old senile felon again.

LOL!! Pathetic.

Is this all you have? "Just you wait...three years from now things will be DIFFERENT!!"

That's almost as stupid as that other member's comment.

I'm gonna ask you again. Who does your ilk have to take over the MAGA mantle in 2028? Answer: nobody, and you are aware of it.

I'll wait and see.

You should, too.

I'm gonna sit back and enjoy the three way "civil war" from the GOP in 2028 (MAGA, GOP establishment, and Tech bro's), while the Dems sail their way right back into the White House based on the fact that Trump is an atrocious president.

to do this without the approval of congress?

Trump does not follow the law and has no use of the constitution or the congress.

Make no mistake.

Stupid comment.
Stupid policy, and, as usual with this administration, stupidly and clumsily executed.

The H-1B visa is designed to help companies fill openings for which American workers with similar abilities cannot be found. Without warning, the White House announced a drastic policy change without warning or planning.

As NBC put it, the announcement set off “panic and chaos” among workers, companies and governments. Businesses and universities advised their foreign workers not to leave the country, because they might not be able to return to the United States. In at least one case, large numbers of passengers demanded that they be allowed to get off a plane about to depart San Francisco for Dubai.
Then — a day late and $100,000 short — the administration scrambled to limit the damage, announcing that this was a one-time fee that didn’t apply to those holding previously issued visas. Needless to say, the initial proclamation didn’t state any of these later clarifications. Magnifying the chaos, the clarifications were announced by posts on X — which does not, as far as I know, constitute an official channel for statements of U.S. policy.
-------------------------
On Saturday, confusion remained about how the new fee would work. Mr. Lutnick said on Friday that it should be paid annually by the American company hiring the foreign worker. But a day later, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, wrote in a post on social media that the $100,000 would be a one-time fee.
Such clumsy, misguided amateurs.

Musk has seriously lost it. His white supremacist rhetoric is out in the open.

So is his incitement of violence:

Speaking over a video link, the tech billionaire criticised "uncontrolled migration", later adding: "Whether you choose violence or not, violence is coming to you. You either fight back or you die."
So yeah, his support among the Republican Party will be strong for sure.

Garry Tan, chief executive of start-up incubator Y Combinator, said in a post on X that the decision by Trump was a mistake that “kneecaps start-ups” and represented a “massive gift to every overseas tech hub” including Vancouver and Toronto in Canada.
“In the middle of an AI arms race, we’re telling builders to build elsewhere.
We need American Little Tech to win — not $100K toll booths,” Tan added.

Yes, that's the way it was designed, but that's NOT the way it is now being used.

Trump's action will bring it back to being used the way it was designed to be used.
