These people show up for scheduled hearings, and then their asylum case is summarily dismissed so that ICE agents can immediately arrest asylum seekers on the spot. It is just one of many ways the administration is using to fill deportation quotas.

And it's likely not legal, but when has that stopped anyone in the Trump admin?

The immigration courts are buried in a backlog of meritless asylum petitions so deep that the average wait time for a hearing is 3-5 years. It’s outrageous and I fully support summary dismissal.

I will never understand. People are working in our fields and restaurants, on our roofs and streets. Perhaps they came without papers, perhaps they lost their visa status while working here. So, we say you must go back to, say, Honduras, take your American-born children, get back in line. How is that effective governing?

How do we determine if the petitions are meritless?
Easy. The law defines the rules for eligibility and timeliness. Problem is there is no one weeding out frivolous petitions on the front end so the immigration courts have a backlog of literally millions of petitions which they hear regardless of merit and are ultimately denied the vast majority of the time.

So, your solution is to reject petitions BEFORE they get a hearing?

What's next? Rendering verdicts before trials?

That’s what happens every day in civil courts all over the country. Not only are frivolous suits summarily dismissed but those who file them are punished.

Asylum seekers are not illegal.

Just making sure everyone understands that.

Mr. Trump didn't mind waiting for his days in court. :D
