Gotta reduce that budget so we can give tax cuts to the wealthy!

A respected network of hospitals and cancer centers is halting enrollment in clinical trials for children with brain cancer after the federal government said it would no longer provide funding to the group.

Wonder whats it's costing to have the NG picking up trash in DC.

Cancer research was reclassified as "waste, fraud, and abuse" months ago. I'm surprised they limped along for this long.

Sounds like they're putting the money toward more promising treatments.

The National Cancer Institute said it will stop funding a 26-year-old collaboration with academic centers to help accelerate new pediatric brain tumor treatments.

Alas, no.

Pediatric? So out of the womb? All good with the "pro-fetus" party.

Alas, no.

Au contraire...

“Over time the fields of pediatric drug development and brain tumor research have evolved considerably,” the HHS spokesperson said via email. “After reviewing this changing landscape, NCI has concluded that its resources can be used most effectively by expanding support for the Children’s Oncology Group Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network (PEP-CTN).”

“NCI will collaborate with PBTC and PEP-CTN to complete ongoing PBTC trials and ensure a smooth transition,” adding that they “do not anticipate any funding gap for pediatric brain tumor research.”

They're putting the money toward child cancer research they believe may be more promising.

Thread title is wrong.

No, it's not. If it said Trump admin cancels funding for ALL pediatric brain cancer trials, that would be incorrect.
Current thread title is correct. This one would be correct as well - Trump admin cancels funding for MOST pediatric brain cancer trials.

At some point you folks will need to wake up and reckon with what a cut is. Cuts don’t mean the money just goes to something else. Own it, you got what you wanted! Government is shrinking, projects are disappearing.
There is no evidence that the funding was cut. You literally made that up. The funding has been shifted to a different group.

Again, this is wrong. The decision was made by the NCI. They moved the funding from the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (PBTC) to the Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network (PEP-CTN). No funding has been cut for pediatric brain tumor research.

Is that how you read that sentence?
I read that the collaboration was to help accelerate new treatments. And funding for it has stopped.

Oh please, spare me from your pedantic finger wagging. It's thread title, not a thesis.

That poster believes everything the trump administration tells him.

Thread title is wrong. Funding was not axed, just awarded to a different group.

The change is based on ideology, not merit.

“We are refocusing resources on high-impact, evidence-based research — free from ideological bias or institutional complacency. While change can be uncomfortable for those invested in the status quo, it is essential to ensure that NCI delivers on its core mission,” he said."

So.

Who got the vigorish for this?

Sentence? I've posted numerous links, one from the NCI itself.

Well, we have the NCI saying they've conducted an assessment and made the determination based on that, vs you who claim otherwise with no evidence or qualifications whatsoever.

Who to believe?

There has been no "severe cut" to the NCI budget. There is a proposed cut to the NIH on the table for next year, but it would require 60 votes in the Senate to pass and looks unlikely,

I'm the only person in the thread that's posted anything of substance. You can lead the cult to facts, but you can't make them read. 🤷‍♀️

It's a favorite type of lie for them, just the simple lie. They're refocusing resources away from high-impact, evidence-based research, not on it. Just like their saying they fired the head of the jobs report in order to release accurate reports, they did it to release inaccurate reports.
