For decades, American presidents have relied on the expertise of foreign policy professionals to help guide them through tricky negotiations in high-stakes conflicts around the globe.

President Trump has taken a different approach toward such experts: He’s fired them.

Now, as Mr. Trump tries to navigate perhaps the trickiest negotiation of his presidency — ending the Russian invasion of Ukraine — he is doing so after having stripped away much of the infrastructure designed to inform him about President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and to keep the United States from being outmaneuvered or even duped.

“They’re flying blind without the expertise,” said Evelyn N. Farkas, executive director of the McCain Institute at Arizona State University. She said the kinds of people who had been fired “have seen all the intelligence relating to Vladimir Putin’s intentions. They have spies on the ground. They know all kinds of information that’s gained through technical means.”

Mr. Trump has gutted the National Security Council, the collection of foreign policy analysts who have helped guide U.S. foreign policy for decades, cutting the staff by more than half. He has purged experts from the intelligence agencies because of tangential connections to a nearly decade-old investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

As Russia continues to pound Ukraine with missiles and drones, Mr. Trump has chosen to rely mostly on himself and a handful of close allies, including friends from the business world. His actions are part of a broader pattern in which Mr. Trump has reshaped the administration to carry out his wishes, not to debate policy or offer him independent advice.
s
And while Mr. Trump has characterized his recent flurry of diplomacy as extremely productive, neither a cease-fire nor a peace settlement looks any closer, at least publicly....

Another hit piece from the NYT

The NYT wants the president's initiative to fail.

Citing someone from the McCain Institute seems laughable, given the strong dislike between the president and the McCains.

If you want to try to prove that the nytimes article contains falsehoods, go for it: copy and paste excerpts from articles published by other credible sources to which you provide the links.

Unless and until you do so, the actions reported by the nytimes stand as factual.

Sometimes people say mean things about a person because they don't like that person.

Other times, people say mean things about a person because that person is a fat, useless lump of shit that couldn't negotiate a blowjob in a whorehouse.

No one has to disprove anything.

There are facts in the article, but they are intertwined/put together with opinions.

Screw the NYT.

I have no idea what this is.

This is the same as in other contexts, recently domestic ones. Trump believes in often empty gestures of force, absent expertise. DC could use more police officers, not armed military troops lacking in expertise. He has in effect fired local police. Do those military have experience in dealing with say, domestic disturbances, street drug trafficking, car thefts? He pushes legislation that cuts funds to cities, then later when crime is declining, sends in the military.

People in countries that have experienced military dictatorships recognize the scenes of soldiers in the streets, people arrested (abducted) without charge by armed, unidentified men, renditions to other countries, the ignoring of judges rulings, and the personal enrichment of the dictator.

What is happening in the US and our under reaction thus far resembles the frog’s unawareness of the increased danger as the water heats up. But we are an ornery people, and I expect that if Trump tries the same in Chicago or New York, and where I live in the SF Bay Area, he will see strong pushback.

Looks as if the nytimes reporting has triggered you.

Btw, do you think that it's wise of the trump administration to have gotten rid of officials who have expertise and experience in the security and intel fields? To have fired people who have knowledge of putin and Russia?

They are not supportive of the talks, and now they tell us the President's team lacks the expertise to conduct them.

You have no idea whether or not the author of the article is "supportive of the talks". This is simply your opinion.

Yes, trump FIRED officials who had experience and expertise. That's a FACT.

Yes, trump fired the officials familiar with putin and Russia.

This is what the article has reported.

As for your belief that the reporter is "not supportive of the talks": Copy and paste the words that say the reporter is not supportive of the talks. (What you've quoted are the details of trump's purges of experts.)

Be sure to highlight the excerpt you believe says, "the reporter is not supportive of the talks".

The McCain Institute has credibility. Trump has none.

Whether he fired them or ignored them, the result would be the same.

To invert LBJ, I guess Trump would rather have them outside the tent pissing in, than inside the tent pissing out.

The problem with Trump's mind is manifested in his inferiority/superiority complex.

His ADHD has always made it impossible for him to listen. That's why he couldn't cut it in school and ended up being thrown out of public school after sucker-punching a teacher.

Trump knows he is inferior to other people who are able to listen and absorb information so he uses his power to establish that he, as the 'superior' one will be the one to talk and others must only listen to him. He talks nonstop and refuses to listen to anyone else. There is thus, no point in having a team of experts try to gather useful information for him and present it to him in either written or verbal form.

What they should really do is create videos for him. That's the only way he takes in any information. He watches TV, videos and programming.

If they wanted to do a daily brief for him, the NSC should create a video every day of what's going on. If there's anything left of the NSC.

From a draft dodging coward supporter. Talk about laughable!

If the goal were to purposely sabotage the post WWII inertia of the United States so that other countries could move in and occupy the role we held in the late 20th century, I'd have to admit that the effort is a success. I'm not convinced that this isn't the goal.

Hummmmm, McCain Institute? Oh, no agenda there. NYTs, no agenda there. Damn, you all fall for everything anti-Trump. Those people he fired were the same ones who were in place when Biden didn't do anything other than make statements that encouraged Putin to invade Ukraine and take Crimea under Obama.

Let's start by explaining just what the president's initiative is. As far as I can tell, he want's Putin to get what he wants. He's hiding that in his declaration that he wants the fighting to stop. Sure, he does. As long as Putin gets what he wants.

I've not seen one strong stance by Trump since 2017 that says otherwise about Putin. Trump worships the man. Putin is America's enemy. What does that say about Trump? He's a Russian asset as sure as I was born in the U.S.
