The closing lines of that song are rapidly becoming a faint memory of what America once was.

Land of the free ?
Home of the brave?

Freedoms, which have always been under assault, are now being taken away with hardly a whimper from the populace. Right now, 'free speech', 'a free press', and 'due process, under the law', are all being slowly rolled back.
Trump has openly mused about deporting American citizens, and about taking away peoples guns. Either of which would have caused outrage across the country had any previous President hinted at the possibility.

But of course, with any previous President it would not require bravery to speak out. Anyone who speaks out against this administration paints a target on their back.

Bye bye freedom and democracy. These are easy things to take away because to protect them requires bravery because of the risk of personal harm. It is always easier to be brave when it is others at risk on your behalf.

Where did he say he wants to take away guns?

Do you also not know about what Lincoln did during the war by throwing American citizens in prison for talking against the war?

Trump would hardly be the first.

Shh. Don't interrupt their fauxrage with facts. It only makes them more obnoxious.

Lincoln had constitutional standing. The privilege of habeas corpus can be revoked in times of rebellion or invasion. It is in fact the only freedom in the constitution that can be set aside.

. . .
I phrased that rather clumsily. My mistake. What he mused about was taking away the guns of someone who may be suspected of a crime. If they were found to be not guilty they would be able to get their guns back. I guess it is not that important now. If he just deported people suspected of a crime, they would not be able to take their guns with them to El Salvador anyway.

Plus it would be cheaper to pay to have these people housed in El Salvador than to do costly investigations and possible trials.

War measures. Every country has them.
What's the war now, the War on Christmas?

What war are we in exactly?

I don't know about a national anthem - but I sure would love to see Billy Joel update "We didn't start the fire" and add a few more verses.

They'd be a hoot.

Invasion you say?

Hmmmmm

No. My point exactly. We're not in a war. Comparing Trump to Lincoln is misguided.
I was comparing Lincoln's locking up of political dissenters with no due process.

His just happened to be during a time of war which ultimately is irrelevant.

He didn't feel the nation's capitol should be surrounded by an enemy, which seems reasonable.

Bull! What freedom has been taken from Americans?

umm, 'free speech', 'a free press', and 'due process, under the law' are all under siege right now. Maybe you missed that bit, but I am not sure how you could have.
Check that. Perhaps you read the word 'guns' and your brain emptied so it could put its full focus on the only right that really matters.
