The New York Times Peter Baker opines "OK, so President Trump’s name is in the Jeffrey Epstein files. But who put it there? Could it possibly have been Barack Obama from his prison cell? Or a tranquilized Hillary Clinton? Oh wait, maybe it was etched onto the documents by Joe Biden’s magical autopen.

"Or is that mixing up different scandals? It’s so hard to keep up with the latest wild notions circulating in the capital and beyond. Washington is awash in conspiracy theories these days, a cascade of suspicion and intrigue promoted or denied in the Oval Office, ricocheting around Capitol Hill and cable news and propelled at warp speed across social media.

"No commander in chief in his lifetime has been as consumed by conspiracy theories as President Trump and now they seem to be consuming him. They have been the rocket fuel for his political career since the days when he spread the lie that Mr. Obama was secretly born overseas and therefore not eligible to be president. More than a decade later, Mr. Trump is coming full circle by trying to divert attention from the Epstein conspiracy theory with a audacious one about Mr. Obama supposedly committing treason.

He saw CTs as a way to manipulate his MAGAs and he was right, except he created a monster with this one.

And the MAGA mob is not going to drop it no matter what Donald calls them.

Will Republicans defend the Republican President?

I doubt it. The forum's Republicans try to avoid Trump.

He is that bad.

Let's face it, our President simply is not very bright.

It would be far-fetched for Trump to pardon a convicted child sex-trafficker like Maxwell (even though he did “wish her well” after she was charged). When asked, he should have dismissed the idea forthwith.

But not Trump. He wanted to make a headline even though the headline would make him look inept and foolish.

While taking questions on his way to Scotland, Trump repeatedly held open the possibility of pardoning Maxwell for her crimes.

“Well, I don’t want to talk about that,” Trump said initially.

Good enough, it should have ended there. But there was no headline in his dismissal. He wanted a headline.

When pressed, he said, “It’s something I haven’t thought about,” while conspicuously adding, “I’m allowed to do it.”

We have a fool for a President.

MAGA's will fall in line and defend him. See my sig.

The Russians gotta love what Trump is doing now through his DNI, Gabbard.

It is not going to work. Here's why.

NBC reports, "The former senior CIA officer who helped oversee the 2017 intelligence assessment on Russia’s interference in the 2016 election says Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and the White House are “lying” when they claim that it was an attempt to sabotage President Donald Trump.

"Susan Miller, a retired CIA officer who helped lead the team that produced the report about Russia’s actions during the 2016 campaign, told NBC News it was based on credible information that showed Moscow sought to help Trump win the election, but that there was no sign of a conspiracy between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign.

“The director of national intelligence and the White House are lying, again,” Miller said. “We definitely had the intel to show with high probability that the specific goal of the Russians was to get Trump elected.”

She added: “At the same time, we found no two-way collusion between Trump or his team with the Russians at that time.”

"The nearly 1,000-page report, the fifth and final one from the Republican-led Senate intelligence committee on the Russia investigation concluded the Trump campaign’s interactions with Russian intelligence services during the 2016 presidential election posed a “grave” counterintelligence threat, a Senate panel concluded Tuesday as it detailed how associates of Donald Trump had regular contact with Russians and expected to benefit from the Kremlin’s help," PBS, Aug 18, 2020.

Told you.

They chose a fool for President. Republicans don't have the ability to respond to issues.

But they enjoy cartoons.

Sorry Peter, Rachel already has a lock on the idiotic snarkasm potato head nonsense. You need to find a different gig.

But, at least you are honest enough to admit this Epstein thing is just a conspiracy theory. I don't even think Rachel has done that.

How "bright" does one need to be to consider the reasons why, when in full charge of the Epstein files, the Democrats didn't release them, either.

Most likely because they contained no evidence that anyone other than Epstein and Maxwell committed any crimes but may contain evidence that could be politically problematic for major Democratic stakeholders, such as friendships with Epstein, trips on his private jet, and trips to his private island. (None of which are illegal in and of themselves but given his crimes would create politically problematic suspicion.)

Given this, why would you suppose Donald Trump is so resistant to releasing them, after suggesting he would if he were elected president last cycle?

IMO, there are two likely possibilities. The first, there are no bombshells in those materials and withholding the information is consistent with how such cases are handled as it protects many of the victims. The other possibility is that both sides have had an opportunity to release the materials and have not because a release would be embarrassing to both sides.

I suspect both of these are the case. There are no bombshells, but there is just enough in there to embarrass prominent Republicans and prominent Democrats.

However, you would think that one side or the other would come out with less egg on their face if the files were released. I can't imagine that both Republicans and Democrats would be equally embarrassed by their release. It sounds like Trump's name appears in them. That they weren't released during the last election cycle by the Biden administration is somewhat surprising and suggests either that Democrats would be politically impacted by their release, or that the Biden administration took the high road and decided not to release damaging information about the Republican candidate. But now Trump is refusing to release them and pulling out all the stops to desperately try to distract from them, suggesting that he would be politically impacted. I don't think anyone believes that Donald Trump would take the high road to protect prominent Democrats from embarrassment.

The only thing we know for sure: The continued refusal to release them is hurting the Trump administration far more than the Democrats.

There was no issue about the Epstein files during the Biden administration. Republicans -- Trump, Bondi, Patel, Bongino -- brought this onto themselves.

You've been around long enough to know that I am a Trump supporter, but I am not a Republican.

In any case, my comment in this thread is on point. Peter Baker uses the same dishonest tactics that we see daily from Rachel Maddow. That means the article that underpins your OP is worse than useless. It's dishonest...as is your entire thread.

It's either nothing to see there, or deep state all around.

You act like a Republican. Republicans often make baseless accusations just as you just did.

What specifically did Baker get wrong?

Trump gives Putin an "or else!"

U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday he intends to shorten the 50-day deadline he gave Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a deal that ends the three-year war in Ukraine.

If Putin doesn't do as he is told ...

Trump will punish India, Brazil, UAE, Turkey, and others!

I ain't lying.
