Preemptive shutdown of major US facility sparks outrage: 'It won't be much longer before more companies follow'

A major solar manufacturer has shut down its U.S. facility before production fully took off — a move that has sparked backlash and renewed concern over the country's ability to support clean energy jobs.

What's happening?

As Electrek detailed, Swiss solar company Meyer Burger closed its Arizona factory in May and laid off 282 employees after stating it couldn't secure the funding necessary to continue operating.

The Goodyear facility was supposed to produce 1.4 gigawatts of solar panels annually — enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes — but the company never reached full production.

This is trump bringing back manufacturing, like it?

That was just an appetizer, are we dumb enough to serve them the main course?

The loan program Solyndra was part of led to a lot of innovation and overall made a profit.

That investments into renewable energy, electric cars and other green technologies have led to rapid technology development. While Western countries have allowed China to dominate the transition. So Western industries now need to catch up and not be hindered by politicians like Trump.

Why he is abandoning solar manufacturing is mind-boggling. China is eating America's lunch and it's stupid.
Yeah, it's ridiculous from an energy readiness perspective. There is a market for all sorts of green energy and plenty of room for growth, so to abandon the innovation to China and doubling down on fossil fuels is a "penny smart, dollar dumb" approach.

Throwing a Trump into an economic system is like pouring sugar in a gas tank.

Because the gas and oil industries are putting money in Trumps pocket.
And conservatives by their very nature are adverse to change.

Families and business in Republican states are now also seeing the benefits with renewable energy. While Republican politicians rather listen to their donors in the fossil fuel industry.
