Thinking of Germany, what comes to your mind?

in my home region brandy is not just made by big firms.
Many farmers have the ancient privilege to make and sell brandy made from their own fruit trees.
so there are many different tastes

My mothers side of the family are from Alsace and my fathers side is from Bavaria/Austria, so its all in the region. I'd love to return there, for a few weeks or years.

I would not be mad if Trump deported me back to Germany.

Schwarzenfeld. A little town in Bavaria. I used to drive past all the time, but never really got to stop for long. Always in a hurry to get somewhere else. I always figured it'd be a nice vacation idea to pick some place and just stay there for a month or two and really explore the area. Instead of just hitting the tourist traps, just get to know the history and some of the locals.

Anyway, Schwarzenfeld is the place I picked. I don't know if I'll ever find the time to get back there - maybe after I retire - but that's where the idea struck me.

Unfortunately WWII dwarfs everything else about Germany when it comes to non German perceptions on Germany. It's kind of like when you think Napoleon Bonaparte, what comes to mind? His boots? His great coat? Josêphine de Beauharnais? Of course, not. The mere mention of Bonaparte conjures images of endless wars.

Sadly she's not around anymore to receive them.. but no worries, it's been long enough that all the memories are happy ones. If only I could get her potato salad and almond crescents right.

Five years ago we took the Viking grand European tour from Amsterdam to Bucharest. It was well worth the trip. Floating past vast vineyards and castles with stops at several along the way was so comfortable and relaxing. Of course we were lucky too since the weather and the depth of the rivers was with us. A year or so later there was a drought which put a damper on the river cruising tours. In Germany we stopped at Cologne, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Miltenberg, and Rottenberg ob der Taub.

Penalty shootouts that we always lose against Germany. That's always my first thought when someone says "Germany."

I think of Jürgen Klinsmann, with his fancy high stepping running and beautiful skills on the football pitch and I think of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

And then I think of German beer, German sausages and that most of the Germans I have met have been really nice people.

Merlin was built by Rolls-Royce for British aircaft.

My bad. But the BF-109 Messerschmitt (I think that is the aircraft pictured) made some impressive speed records for the period.

Hi Rumpel,

My first thought? You are my neighbours. And you're good neighbours. Damn good neighbours!



But WWII is history I have always be very interested in. So that always lingers in the background and is probably my second thought.

Now this could easily be construed as a negative comment, but it is not meant like that at all. Or at least not from my perspective. The German people today do not represent Nazism at all.

The thing is, history is what shapes are future in many ways. On my part, I just want to make sure people do not forget what happened back in '40-'45. Because if anyone thinks that this happened because their were German people in Germany, than you are mistaken. This can happen in any country, as you can see today in the US and many other countries around the world. A new growing, but worrying, trend.
