JD Vance arrived in France for the summit on artificial intelligence (AI), the first two paragraphs of the article cited below, says all there needs to be said about how the U.S. is going to approach AI going forward. Keep in mind, the three biggest tech guys in the country, acquiescing to Trump in the last weeks of the campaign, giving them the status of a front-row seat at his inauguration, all had a motive for sucking up to Trump.

D Vance warns Europe to go easy on tech regulation in major AI speech
PARIS (AP) — U.S. Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday warned global leaders and tech industry executives that "excessive regulation" could cripple the rapidly growing artificial intelligence industry in a rebuke to European efforts to curb AI's risks.

The speech underscored a widening, three-way rift over AI.

The United States, under President Donald Trump, champions a hands-off approach to fuel innovation, while Europe is tightening the reins with strict regulations to ensure safety and accountability. Meanwhile, China is rapidly expanding AI through state-backed tech giants, vying for dominance in the global race.

People who don't understand what is possible using artificial intelligence, aren't looking at the big picture. When people think of AI, they think of a video short of Tom Cruise talking and laughing and moving about, but it wasn't Tom Cruise at all, it was done with AI. People might remember the 'deepfake' Barack Obama video, created using AI. We're entering an era in which our enemies can make it look like anyone is saying anything at any point in time even if they would never say those things.

The weaponization of AI is one of the biggest threats facing countries all over the world. Cybersecurity threats, environmental harms, intellectual property infringement, lack of accountability, and lack of explainability and transparency. This is the point of the AI summit in Paris, to control AI through regulation.

If anyone has not heard of the AI system currently used by the military, it's known as 'LAWS' - 'Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems'. LAWS is a military system which can search, aim, and attack automatically, according to its programmed instructions. LAWS do not need human operation and at this point have integrated into all areas of warfare.

Obviously, private tech companies cannot go unregulated. If left unchecked, the potential for widespread, even global danger, is possible in the wrong hands. JD Vance delivered a full-throated 'America First' vision of the US being an AI superpower. He warned against any efforts to overregulate the AI industry.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but it's starting to feel a little dystopian. But those sounding the warnings will be laughed at and ignored. People who say there is nothing to fear with AI, and are also against regulation of it, are the most ignorant and dangerous.

I’m not sure deep fake videos are the worst thing AI can do. If they become common, they lose credibility. No one will take any videos seriously.

I am more worried about all its other potential military and intelligence uses.

A little? That's exactly where they're aiming.
