The Undecideds.

I've been following the combined polls originally compiled by 538. The data provides, daily, the percent of those who approve of President Donald Trump and those who disapprove of him. Combine the two values, subtract from 1, and you have the percent undecided.

When I first began tracking the unbdecideds on March 7th of this year, they were at 4.5%. Then, beginning March 10th, their percent dropped to 2.8 on March 19th. The value held steady at 2.9 until April 3rd, when it began to rise to 3.9 on April 12th. Since that high point, the percent undecided reduced to about 3.7 and held steady to April 22nd. It has been at 3.4 for the last three days.

There has been much speculation as President Trump's popularity has fallen on just which group has contributed: the Pro-Trump folks or the undecideds. It appears that, given the stability of the undecided numbers since April 5th, that the pro-trump group has been shrinking. The popularity value has dropped 2%, while the undecideds have remained steady.

A new poll out today show Trump underwater in everything including immigration something we have also seen in other recent polling. Independents have certainly soured on him but it seems there is some softening amongst Republicans too.

Does it matter? Trump has law enforcement, a cowering majority Congress and the military for at least the next three-plus years.

Not sure what you are looking at, 538 is largely dead. ABC killed off the website in early March and let a slew of people go. As much as I do not like them, VoteHub is one of the few polling aggregators left alive that direct links you to the poll results that "meet their criteria" for inclusion.

That said the usual "Don't know/Refused" respondents tend to be usually x2 of the polling sample size margin of error. Say, if the margin of error is 2% then expect those sort of responses to be between 4% and 5%. It is not linear, but somewhat close. Because the another influential factor tends to be how many independents were included in the polling as close to the party affiliation typical numbers. The more that is out of line tilted to party faithful either way (or both) the more the "Don't knows" is skewed.

The bigger take away, far more important than the 3% to 5% that do not like the question or legitimately for whatever reason do not know, is Trump is well over 51% disapproval by the aggregate and well under 45% approval. The FoxNews poll from last week was eye opening, and even got a Trump TruthSocial rant about it.



As far as Trump approval ratings go, this will eventually become entirely about the economy. The "don't knows" will become inconsequential in altering that path.
