The real reason you need to worry about Hawley's objection on Biden victory

Don't be too nervous about Republican Sen. Josh Hawley's announcement that he will object to the certification of Joe Biden as President when Congress meets on Jan. 6. His ploy won't stop Biden from taking the oath of office on Jan. 20. But it should make everyone concerned about the long-term health of our democracy. According to federal law, if at least one senator and one House member submit written objections to a state's Electoral College votes, the House and the Senate must retire to their separate chambers for two hours of debate. Each chamber then votes on whether to count that state's votes. The 1887 law that dictates this process -- the Electoral Count Act -- is confusing and convoluted, but the bottom line is that Congress must count a state's Electoral College votes unless both the House and the Senate vote to reject them. Hawley's objection -- which will join a planned objection from Alabama Representative Mo Brooks in the House -- has zero chance of succeeding. The Democrats who control the House surely will not go along, and it is likely that a number of Senate Republicans, such as Mitt Romney, will also reject this blatant attempt at overruling the will of the voters. What is more concerning is that the delusional Republican gambit is happening at all. There has been zero evidence of meaningful voter fraud or a compromised presidential election. Elections officials from both parties have said that the 2020 election was one of the most secure ever.

In a statement posted on social media, Hawley claimed that states such as Pennsylvania "failed to follow their own state election laws." This is false: the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which is the authority on Pennsylvania law, rejected numerous Republican-backed lawsuits both before and after the election. The US Supreme Court also refused to consider a challenge from Pennsylvania Republicans to block the certification of the results. American democracy cannot survive the losing party refusing to accept defeat. A peaceful transfer of power demands that we all accept the legitimacy of the election, with the losing candidates recognizing their losses and trying to win in the next election. We need to think critically about bolder changes to thwart these anti-democracy tendencies, such as fixing gerrymandering, abolishing the Electoral College, revising the outdated Electoral Count Act that opens the door to these objections, and reaffirming our commitment to the fundamental right to vote. Without serious reforms, we will continue to witness the undermining of our elections from those who care more about their own political power than about American democracy.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R/MO) Rep. Mo Brooks (R/AL) et. al. would trash our democratic elections in order to seize power. They have no valid complaint here.

60 different state/federal courts (and the US Supreme Court) ruled the Trump campaign failed to present any viable evidence of either voter fraud or procedural errors.

There were numerous state recounts. Trumps own Department of Justice said there was no widespread voter fraud as did Trumps own Department of Homeland Security.

Rogue: I agree with all of that, however, I feel like this is a runaway train and it's not going to be stopped until it crashes and hopefully burns. Might as well have all of these a-holes on the record. The GOP is already fractured, may as well complete the break.

But, you do have to fear what will happen when one party controls the House and Senate and an election doesn't go their way in the future.

We could always pull a Donald and start claiming that the 2024 election is rigged by Republicans and any outcome other than a blue wave is the result of fraud. In the long run, this may be the only way to block the rise of Empress Ivanka.

May as well at this point.

He thinks he can win the presidency in 2024 with djt voters.

Yep. Surely the Trump folks won't object to that given their acceptance of Trump's claim of fraud well before the election.

No, he sees the political landscape and he’s making the same decision that a lot of GOP politicians are facing/

Donald Trump ripped the scab off of the dirty secret of GOP national politics.

It isn’t exactly a secret that the GOP depends heavily on white resentment and Archie Bunkerism to win elections.

Hawley has to choose between being a principled conservative. or the sort of carnival barker, gimmick shouting, blowhard that the talk radio right wing hasn’t been able to get enough of.

Harley chose the latter.

There isn’t going to be an empress Ivanka.

A historian once wrote of Charlemagne's sons and grandsons being less illustrious: "Charles the Fat, Charles the Bald, Charles the Simple; fat bald or simple, none of the lesser Charleses had the gravitas or foresight of their grandfather."

I don't think any of Donnie's kids will fare as well in capturing the heart and soul of the party base. He was truly a one trick pony. they'll be fishing around for a real dictator in future - one who can actually do the job. Then we should worry.

While Josh Hawley pretends to be a populist man of the people, he will need to hide his upbringing as part of the elites. Father was a Banker, -1. Mother was a teacher, +1. Went to private prep school, -1. Went to Stanford, Yale law, was an associate professor at Missouri state University, -3. Obviously part of the liberal elite educational system. He did work for some conservative religious liberty organizations fighting against LGBTQ rights or for religious bigotry, depending on your point of view. He also fought against the idea of unionized labor. But I see nothing in his background about fighting for the common man.
So here he is, throwing himself headfirst into an unwinnable battle, that as a constitutional lawyer, he knows has no basis in law of any kind and is doomed to fail. Why? To do the same as the others jumping on the lawsuit train. Get the support of the Trump base in the next election. There may be a problem with this idea.
Remember what happened in the tea party revolution? The base went hard right and developed several litmus tests for candidates. anybody remember leader Bohner? How about Ryan? A rising star one minute and a pariah the next.
Amp up the tea party on the meth of a continuous trump overdose and let's see what will be an acceptable Republican candidate in 2022. No one short of a QANON believer will do.

Every single one of these reprobate pigs should be tried for treason.

Utterly dispicable.

They have not committed treason. They are, including trump, perhaps walking the line on conspiracy of sedition. What should happen is all of their recent and future statements in regards to this election be played in near continuous loops to display the idiocy and un-American stand of their positions and actions. Make sure it is played on their supporter's feeds. Use the same tactics as the right, (read Soviets), did.
Trying them for crimes will not work any more than impeaching Trump did. Let's just keep their actions and words in the public eye for as long as necessary.

I don't think Ivanka will really be much of a threat.

All that baggage doesn't matter.

Trump was once a democrat the republicans didn't care.

Trump is the definition of a liberal elite, republicans don't care.

Trump is morally and ethically empty, religious republicans can give a shit.

At this point republicans don't even care about policy. At the end of the day I'm sure the slogan "not a democrat" will probably be enough to get the party nominee.

I don't know... The republican base fever is pretty high right now. I'm guessing whoever owns the lib more will be the 2024 republican representative

As a Missourian, I can assure you that Hawley was never anything but the latter the moment he entered politics. And likely before. He's an absolute embarrassment to Missouri.

After the way democrats reacted to the Trump election and Presidency, don't attempt to act as if the democrats have any moral high ground. Sorry pieces of work who did nothing to try to "come together" for the good of the country. Never did they "want to heal" the divide once Trump won. All democrats and their liberal press minions did was cause as much trouble as they could, lie, steal, cheat, make up BS.

Says the party who never negotiated with Obama. Who resisted every single bill ever introduced, to include every single budget, funding the government month to month, shutting the government down when they didn't get their way like a bunch of babies. We had six years of your infantile whining. You showed us how to oppose. Don't give me any shit about the moral high ground.

I'm just thinking of it as a new updated precedent for the parties moving forward.

it's kinda/sorta similar to the decision that Goldwater (and other politicians) had to make all those years ago...
