Turkey’s top judge has harshly slammed the government over its interventions into the judiciary and its strongly worded criticisms of the Constitutional Court’s verdicts, accusing it of committing “a corruption of conscience” against justice. The Court has been responsible for overturning the Twitter ban and resisting government censorship.

“Accusing the Constitutional Court of having political purposes or of issuing ‘non-national verdicts’ is a shallow accusation,” Constitutional Court Head Haşim Kılıç said in his address on the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the court’s foundation. This was addressing Erdogans remark that the Courts decision to overturn Twitter was against the national will - he has now made an application arguing Twitter infringed his personal rights.

“The judiciary is not and should not be a place for setting a trap for the people’s will. The judiciary has recently been confronted with a heavy accusation, being described as a ‘parallel state’ and a gang. It’s not possible for the judiciary to survive as long as this accusation is there,” he said.

Kilic said that the face of Erdogans increasing Putinist style of governance, he will ensure that the Constituional Court will "protect the rights of citizens and expand them".

AND:

Turkish President Abdullah Gül has approved a bill expanding the powers and immunities of the country’s spy agency amid strong reactions from opposition parties which argued that the bill will turn the country into "an intelligence state."

Gül’s office announced that the bill was signed into law by Gül late April 25. The bill was much criticized by the opposition parties on the grounds that it will increase the National Intelligence Organization's (MİT) powers without adequate checks and balances. However, critics believe that the Constitutional Court may once again over ride the government.

Turkey is turning into a dictatorship and you can bet that Kilic will be gone very soon:

I think this post adequately summaries why this failed state should not be allowed into the EU.

Good to hear from you Kaya, been awhile buddy.

I'm really concerned about the current state of affairs in Turkey, seems like this current president and government have absolutely lost it and have reversed any progress made in the perception that Turkey is a modern democracy that can be part of the EU.

It's unfortunate.

Of course, the real story here is that the CIA-backed Gulen movement is actively subverting Erdogan's democratically-elected government. This is clear from the fact that a Gulen movement member who previously was the lead in the Ergenekon investigation, which primarily implicated Eurasianist and pro-Russian elites in efforts to subvert or overthrow the Turkish government, is also the one who spearheaded the corruption investigations against Erdogan and his supporters. At its core it is most likely about the U.S. wanting to remove Erdogan because of his efforts to build relations with Iran and growing hostility towards Israel. Unfortunately, this has prompted a crackdown on some dissent and a purge of government branches. It is in this context that Erdogan's release of many Ergenekon suspects has important geopolitical implications. Erdogan has reportedly made overtures towards joining a potential Eurasian Union out of frustration with the stalling of EU talks. Releasing various elites who favor moving Turkey closer to Russia could be an indication that Erdogan is looking to abandon its alliance with the United States, i.e. leave NATO, in response to the ongoing efforts to subvert the Turkish government.
