There are numerous factors that helped trump, oligarchs, systemic benefits, free media, etc. But IMO the central message reason he won is that he tapped into making voters angry better than other politicians. Democrats with their 'it's not perfect but they're trying' were sitting ducks.
trump was able to become the 'if it upsets you, vote trump' candidate. He began by asking pollsters what to run on and was told immigration and has used it since.
Then he's constantly made up phony issues. They're eating your cats and dogs. And grabbed issues of the day, look at those egg prices.
And it's been a constant 'Democrats are corrupt, lawless, traitors, commies, pedophiles, and let's see, fascists, and liars and abusers of power' and more. And what's happened is people blame Democrats generally. They're the swamp', 'the deep state', whatever. They have the nerve to call Democrats the elitists.
I think it's that simple, and so we saw trump blame Democrats for whatever he thought his mob would fall for. Energy efficient toilets, paper straws, pennies, whatever. And he got them to support him as the victim of witch hunts.
It seems largely that simple. It's child-like but effective. As people see oligarchy taking their money and power, it's amorphous and trump gives them a champion. It's also why Bernie was so many people's first choice who had trump second choice. Can Democrats learn to counter that? The odds don't seem good, but the odds are good on a trump backlash. Give a monkey a gun and few are happy with what happens.
