We hear from Trump, his cronies and even his MAGA followers on this message board that Trump is trying to protect Jewish students by his demands to these universities, that does not seem to be true if you believe the Harvard president. He says the three things that the Trump administration demands is that the, the administration, get to choose any new professors, that they get to fire any professors they want and that they get to control admissions. Sorry, if I have to choose between believing Trump and the Harvard president, I go with the Harvard president against a man who lied 20,000 times during just his first term alone. The fact that the right wing wants to control all levels of education also make me want to believe the Harvard President.

Yep, I'll also go with someone other than trump, the serial-liar-in-chief.

Here's hoping Harvard prevails in court. If that doesn't happen, and trump is successful in his attempt to politicize / control education at the highest levels....well, to say democracy and we are screwed will be a massive understatement.

No link, how convenient.

We’ve read it. It’s ridiculous. The Harvard president was right to tell Trump to shove it.
It's within the schools right to reject the demands. But it's also within the government's right to withhold funding.

Harvard University sued the Trump administration in federal court Monday, the latest move in the escalating feud between the nation’s wealthiest school and the White House.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts against multiple federal agencies, seeks to block the Trump administration from withholding federal funding “as leverage to gain control of academic decision making at Harvard.”

Alan M. Garber, the president of Harvard, said in a message to the university community Monday that the Trump administration’s actions are unlawful and beyond the government’s authority.

Although some members of the administration have said their letter of demands sent this month was issued by mistake, Garber said, other statements and actions suggest otherwise: In addition to a freeze of $2.2 billion in federal funding, the government has considered taking steps to freeze an additional $1 billion in grants, initiated numerous investigations of Harvard’s operations, threatened the education of international students and said that it is considering a revocation of Harvard’s tax-exempt status....

The Ivy League university is accusing the Trump administration of violating its First Amendment rights, federal administrative procedures and regulations for taking action against institutions. Harvard also claims that while Trump administration officials have accused the school of violating Title VI, a federal law that says any school found to violate civil rights is not eligible for federal funding, they failed to follow the procedures set out in the law....

...The president and fellows of Harvard College filed the sweeping complaint against the departments of Health and Human Services, Education, Energy, and Defense, the General Services Administration, the National Institutes of Health, NASA, and the leaders of those agencies.

According to the complaint, the “fatal procedural shortcomings are compounded by the arbitrary and capricious nature” of the decision. Before the funding freeze, the government had threatened to terminate nearly $9 billion in federal funding, not just to Harvard, but also to affiliated Boston hospitals and independent corporate entities not under Harvard’s control....

Kermit Roosevelt, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, said Harvard has a solid case, especially the claims alleging the government violated Title VI and the Administrative Procedure Act.

“It looks as though the administration is just sort of doing what it wants to without real concern for what the law is,”
said Roosevelt, an expert on constitutional law. He said a win for Harvard could embolden other universities to fight back against the Trump administration, but a loss in this case could mean the “end of the resistance.”...

Anybody can sue... but that don't mean you're prevail in court.

Pay especial attention to the part about the administration's "just sort of doing what it wants without real concern for what the law is".

At first Harvard was the 'hero' rejecting the demands and the funding. That lasted for about a week. Now they're suing to try to reject the demands AND get the funding. Is this not predictable or what?

Harvard remains "the hero" for not knuckling under to the administration's demands for control over the university.

Harvard, the world’s wealthiest university, sued the Trump administration on Monday, fighting back against its threats to slash billions of dollars from the school’s research funding as part of a crusade against the nation’s top colleges.

The lawsuit signaled a major escalation of the ongoing fight between higher education and President Trump, who has vowed to “reclaim” elite universities. The administration has cast its campaign as a fight against antisemitism, but has also targeted programs and teaching related to racial diversity and gender issues.

Earlier this month, it sent Harvard a list of demands that included auditing professors for plagiarism, reporting to the federal government any international students accused of misconduct, and appointing an outside overseer to make sure that academic departments were “viewpoint diverse.”

Alan M. Garber, Harvard’s president, accused the government in a statement on Monday of trying to wield “unprecedented and improper control.” Dr. Garber said the consequences of the government’s actions would be “severe and long lasting."...

See that word, "reclaim"? Universities do not belong to trump or to the Federal Government.

That's not in the letter posted here from the gov't to Harvard. Makes for good stuff to use to stir up libs, but it "just ain't so."

We're still waiting for the link about your assertion that musk had 180 days to find 2 trillion in government waste.

It would be generally stupid for the government to do such. You do realize why its in the best interest of the United States to have Harvard and other first flight universities engaged in research, correct? Tell us all you are being disingenuous here and not just flaunting your ignorance....

Much of American knowledge and know-how, which has given (to date anyway) America a huge advantage in medicine, science, telecommuications, electronics/computing, space and military is rooted in university research partially funded by the government.

What Trump is doing, rather stupidly actually, is to make America ignorant again --- putting us behind other technologically advanced nations. Then again, Trump fundamentally wants to dumb down America.... There is NO upside to what he is doing here, and incredible downside. Similar in effect to tariffs: unilaterally shooting ourselves in the head.

Anyway that thinks Trump has taken even ONE step in the direction of "making America Great Again" is oblivious to what is actually happening, which is has put America on his back and is running as fast as his bone spurs will allow AWAY from greatness. If you don't comprehend that, then have another glass of Kool-Aid.

I just want the party and administration of so-called small government to get the hell out of trying to selectively control public and private institutions. Want to pull federal funding from colleges and universities? Let the Congress do it, and do it across the board. That’s their job.

These Republican hypocrites and a massively overreaching Trump need to be called out at every turn on this crap. They’re supposed to run the government, not run public or private colleges and universities or tell them what to do under the threat of withholding federal funding. I hope the courts curb stomp this president.

Why would MAGA be interested in links?

You literally take anything Donald claims at face value then dutifully replicate it ad nauseum like a photocopier.

Why would anybody bother to defend a point with a photocopier?

Why should we believe Harvard. They are fighting to stay on the taxpayers dole. Of course they are claiming the administration is making unreasonable requests. Where is their proof?

I've got 2 grand girls who are juniors in college, they are both seriously worried about funding for scholarships like the Hope Scholarship in Georgia. They rely on this to help make their college experience more affordable based on maintaining high grades. One will graduate in a year with a bachelors in nursing, the other will graduate and go on to law school. NO ONE in this country should support a president who supresses higher education based on the whims of a cranky old dementia ridden fool.

Funny thing is, many of these magat congress critters and senators benefited from the same government assistance they are voting against, talk about hypocrisy!!!
