The H2/He Annihilator:
I've come up with the ultimate power source for my si-fi spaceships.
The beam moves the gas across the chamber, and by the time it has gotten to the other side, it has been stripped down to an electrical charge, E=MC^2. This charge is deposited on one side of the chamber making a dipole with the other. No heat, no steam, no turbines, although they may act as gyros for your ship. Perfectly efficient. Just think all that steam and turbine you don't have to haul.
Another version strips the gas down to photons which are transmitted about the ship by fiber optics to banks and painted overhead. Engines run on light to, the exhaust is very bright, but sent in a dispersal pattern rather than a beam.
