The Gunslinger: Ruined Before it's Started

I liked the ending to The Mist. It hit me pretty hard.

I liked it too, it wasn't your typical Hollywood ending (Im so sick of those) and it was a lot better than King's written ending (his story ends when they leave the grocery store) imo.

Now it's not about race? You just said it's because he's black. That Roland's ethnicity wasn't up for interpretation. The piercing blue eyes. And that Elba's race would spoil the racial dynamic between Roland and Detta.

And I also happen to think highly of Tom Hanks as an actor. He's shown the ability to pull off everything from comedy to serious drama and won Oscars for it and I think that were he a little younger he could have played the role of Roland quite well.

Tom Hanks is the best actor of his generation. But that doesn't amount to unlimited versatility; doesn't mean he's suitable for any role. Tom Hanks has a friendly, homey kind of presence. A good dad type. He's almost completely unintimidating. He wouldn't fit as a sociopathic villian or a sexy action hero, as examples. Nor a gunslinger IMHO.

I don't see why sticking to key character traits is so difficult. What's going to happen with Detta Walker/Susannah? The racial dynamics of the story are key. Did you read the same books I did?

We're talking eight books here. Into a movie that's what, two and half maybe three hours? There's depth in the novels that just isn't going to make it onto the screen. I think you're overstating the importance of race to the story. There can still be tension between roland and detta. Sure maybe the context of the tension is massaged a bit to make more sense. There's so much to love about the series I can't see how that ruins everything else. And Mr. King himself agrees.

This chubby black guy?

That's the only Idris Elba I know, and he's a badass. His name as been bandied around for several years to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Shhhhh, James bond is going to be ruined for OP if he finds out.

I would LOVE Elba as Bond. Especially since I adhere to the Bond = Call sign as opposed to Bond = Bond theory. The only thing I'd be disappointed with in terms of superficial casting things with regards to Bond would be if they cast someone who couldn't pull off a British accent. I don't even really care which dialect, though I'm sure proper Brits might, but I'd want it to be at least something within that gamut.
