All eyes on Greenland as decisive election approaches

2025 Greenlandic general election

Since Greenland is such a hot topic right now. The current government is a coalition of Inuit Ataqatigiit (Socialist, Environmentalist, Nationalist- pro indepdence) and Naleraq (pro- independence, populist), while the largest opposition party is Siumut (Social Democratic, Pro- Independence). Polls indicates Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede's IA will win another mandate to govern. Independence is a hot topic on Greenland. Greenland has the right to declare themselves independent (have had that right since 2009). One of the reasons there has been little progress on the independence front despite most Greenlanders and political parties wanting independence is because Copnehagen pays 60% of their budget, so they simply can't afford to lose economic support.

Because of threats from the United States, a law was passed this February that bans anonymous donations from abroad to Greenlandic politicians or political parties. The Greenlandic parliament: the Inatsisartut has 31 seats.

they are voting today now

Surprise result! The Pro-Business Demokraatit has won the election.

Greenland's pro-business opposition wins election amid Trump control pledge

This is a party that is not very Pro- Independence minded, as they see nationalism as potentially hurting Greenland's economic prospects. Demokraatit is a neoliberal pro- business party, and secured 30% of the vote and will now have to look for coalition partners.

Full result according to wikipedia:
Demokraatit 30,26 % (pro business, liberal)
Naleraq 24,77 % (populist, pro- independence)
Inuit Ataqatigiit 21,62% (Socialist, Nationalist, Environmentalist)
Siumut 14,88% (Social Democratic, pro- independence)
Atassut 7,39 % (liberal- conservatist, unionist)

This is a party that is not very Pro- Independence minded,
How so? From what I've read, the vast majority of parties in Greenland are pro-independence, including this one. They mostly differ on the hows and whens.

They have in the past been more cautious than the others, they are not Unionist (that's Atassut), so they don't support staying part of Denmark forever, but unlike the Nationalist minded parties their attitude has been: "Not now," and it has been that for a long time.

I think it's interesting that a party that's not Nationalist minded won, in the polls (that were made by Greenlandic newspapers in January) the Nationalist minded parties were all in the lead, but things happened since January, and I think Trump scared many Greenlanders that now worries that independent Greenland would have no protection from Trump. So they voted for a centrist Neoliberal party that says "now is not the time" regarding independence.

Yes, perhaps more conservative in how they go about it, but still definitely tapping into pro-independence sentiment.

That's exactly how every article I read this morning described them. I probably read 5 different accounts of the election results this morning, and I felt comment 3 was somewhat inconsistent with all I had read.

Also, it looks like Naleraq (the strongest supporter of full independence from Denmark), surged in popularity, coming in a strong second with a very good showing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I am.

You are correct, Naleraq is the party that is pushing for independence the hardest. They are the ones who wants it now. All the others are more cautious. IA is the other party that has very nationalist language and usually talks alot about independence, but they also talk about "economic independence" first. Siumut is more cautious, and Demokraatit has a very stern "business first, independence maybe at some point" attitude.

i wish them independence

Denmark was very disrespectful to them

Well that will now wait, since Demokraatit have said their timetable is 10 to 20 years.

You believe Trump will treat them better?

I note that the new Greenland PM in waiting has already dismissed Trump's takeover plans.

Independence!

Independence!
Independence right now would be about a day, then Trump would just occupy it. There is now also a security reason for Greenland to wait.
