Since Oswald Spengler's dire predictions of western decline, there have been many prophecies of doom.
This is an opinion piece from The Australian. It discusses why predictions of western decline are different this time. This time it's for real, and the new correlation of forces in the world can't be denied.

"...The question has been posed many times, going back to Oswald Spengler's pessimistic post-World War I forecasts. Since that time, the West has been written off, first against the Soviet bloc and then again following the rise of the Japanese-led Asian tiger economies.
This time, however, there are important differences. The economic data shows a pronounced shift in global production, consumption and wealth; a shift the Lowy Institute's Mark Thirlwell calls the great convergence..."

It does Americans no good to pretend that reality does not exist. If one wishes to deal effectively with reality one must come to grips with it.
