I have seen throughout these last years a plight on humanity's willingness to sacrifice freedom for security. Some who read this will still feel the way they always have, and some who read this might have a change of perspective on things. I am a person that observes. I try not to put a whole lot of opinion into things because opinions hold little to no weight in this medium. What I can provide to you is a sum of my observations. Take them for what you will, I am not here to sway anyone right or left, for I hold no allegiance in these matters.
There are such places that the US hold, places where they keep their suspected terrorists without any hope of having a fair trial, or in most cases a trial at all. These men were captured and detained for a reason, so why can they not have trials for that reason. The money filtered to these places to maintain them must be a substantial amount considering that some prisoners have been detained for a period of over six years. Why has it come to this? And more importantly, why are people turning a blind eye? To be honest, I have no opinion on whether the people held in these places are guilty or not, like I stated before, they are there for a reason, whatever that may be. However, I have to say that the situation scares me, as it should you. Let's say for a moment that this continues, even after we have the conflicts in the Middle East all wrapped up. From what I observe about this situation is that it could be applied anywhere to anyone. Today it is applied to the suspected Terrorists that are held and charged with crimes in the War on Terror. But what about tomorrow? What is the next objective here?
One thing that came to my mind was that most of these detention facilities are overseas in lands that most of us will never come near. They are out-of-sight-out-of-mind. It is so easy for us to put problems past us because they do seem a world away, and they are! But what about all the detainees that were brought from your homeland? USA, Britain, Italy, France... all these countries and more have had recognized terrorist cells that have been uncovered, arrests were made, and off they go, end of story. The morality of these people being charged with crimes and held without trial is actually not what I am here to debate. I am here to debate how easily this could be applied to you. How, without a second thought, you are taken from your home and family in an instant, holed up in a facility with no word on a trial or hearing.
Today these men detained are there for being suspected terrorists. Today the forces of our nations are hunting down more like them. What about tomorrow? I think of all the names on lists that government agencies keep and wonder who are on those lists and why... and more importantly when they will act on them. I can say with some degree of faith that this will happen someday, that some of us will be taken from our homes, charges brought against us, but not a judge in sight to pass his sentence on us. I propose that we need to bring these facilities to an end. Why have we not given these men trials? I can think of no excuse as to why they have been left to rot there. If they are truly guilty or not of their crimes, I am not here to say. Just keep in mind that it was easy enough to detain whom every they want, so why couldn't it be you?
