The fake fentanyl justification

Trump has used the fentanyl excuse as the legal justification for tariffs.

This despite the fact that actions taken recently resulted in tariffs being paused.

He now claims Canada didn't do enough.

As Trudeau pointed out today fentanyl seizures by US authorities have dropped 97%, down to 1/2 ounce in February.

Meanwhile gun and drugs coming into Canada from the US spiked - in fact have doubled in the past 2 years.


So why the tariffs? As Trudeau pointed out several times today it's the 51st state bullshit. Trump's stated plan to wreck our economy to the point we're a "non viable country" that can be annexed by the US.

Does the cocaine, meth and heroin in Canada come from Europe or the US? I can't imagine it's significantly domestically produced, with the legalization of marijuana for years now, that's a much safer option even in the gray market.

The US is the largest supplier of cocaine and MDMA into Canada.

Heroin comes into west coast ports from Asia.

For good measure, Dear Leader punctured that excuse yesterday.

“What they have to do is build their car plants, frankly, and other things in the United States, in which case they have no tariffs."

Surprise! He lied. He only cited drugs as an excuse to declare an emergency, which allows him to levy tariffs more freely. Ever notice how dictators keep declaring states of emergency when they don't really exist...?

Every country has addictions problems. The difference is that they work on solutions rather than blame everyone else.

Trump has proposed nothing to address the substance abuse problems Americans face.

And as long as there's a demand in the USA it will be supplied. That's how capitalism works. You could cut the heads off all the cartels today and others would take their places tomorrow.

The pretext is a load of rubbish. There's no way anyone can be a big enough idiot to think 25% tariffs on goods is the way to address drug trafficking across a nation's borders, especially when the country in question is an ally. So like most things Donnie Boy does and says, you have to assume he's either and idiot or a liar; not that the two are mutually exclusive, of course.

That doesn't mean he takes the tariffs off of Canada, it means that the businesses that are in the US don't have to pay tariffs.
In any case, I don't like the Fentanyl reason either, one has nothing to do with the other.

According to your calculations, the amount of Fentanyl seized in FY2024 would be enough to kill over 5 billion people. I wonder how many it would be for the amount that got through... probably multiple times the entire world population.

Same as the approach to waste, fraud and corruption, go to the government agencies, not the people stealing the money. Hospitals, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, etc.

I truly hope he goes totally off the hook. I think that the events of the last week or two have been extremely unsettling for many Americans and an unhinged 90 minute rant will ice that cake.
