Lori Lightfoot was sworn in as Chicago’s 56th mayor Monday at an inauguration ceremony rich with both the political history that it makes, the expectations it creates and the uncertainty that lies ahead.

“For years, they’ve said Chicago ain’t ready for reform,” Lightfoot declared.

“Well, get ready … because reform is here,” she added. “I campaigned on change, you voted for change, and I plan to deliver change to our government.”

Nevermind the whole, "The Machine is dead" narrative that the Press has been trying to peddle...(it didn't die with Byrne and it certainly didn't die with Washington)

Luckily she'll be gone in 4 years.

Unfortunately, I know exactly how much damage she can do in those 4 years.

More will be given wastefully to the South and West sides. More will be taken greedily from the North and Downtown. (so many adverbs, damn....)

Businesses will not be drawn to an inhospitable environment. Those that are already in development will slow down, and those that are here will downshift to neutral.

CPD will be hamstrung.

Property taxes will rise

People will flee.

We are screwed.

So when it comes to that ****hole Chicago, you're a "business as usual" guy? You know that's failed for decades, right? I suppose you're only a "something new" guy when that something new is an old fat white guy.

As an old man, I remember that the Windy City was once the railroad hub of the nation.

Yes, what has happened to the Windy City in the last several decades is very, very, very sad.

Yet, the same can be said for other once wonderful, vibrant, and orderly American cities.

I assume that many people will decide that it is time to move on, just as people have done in those other cities.

It seems the crowd cheered, and the Aldermen remained silent. Hah! Funny stuff!

Lori sounds smart, sensible, mature, and has shown she can work with both Dem & Republican causes. I see her as a breath of fresh air. Are you assuming her AA heritage will mean she will advocate for men & women of colour, over Caucasians? Because that has yet to be seen, and as I earlier stated she seems to have taken moderate bi-partisan paths throughout her life. In fact, this last is what I like about her; she's not full-out in any niche corners.

Do you think that people go into politics for altruistic reasons or for money and the power? (By and large?) Do you think that's gonna change or do you think they'll just find a different, perhaps worse way of doing things?

I'm going by the words that came directly out of her mouth. Of course she'd going to do just as I said, throw good money after bad. People act like it is Daley's fault for what the South and West sides have become, rather than what the elected alderman, precinct bosses, local businesses, and people have made it to be. There is plenty of ways to rise the South and West sides up, Rahm actually had a part in a program with Rick Bayless that is the direction needed to be taken. Unfortunately, our new Mayor don't have the pull or the wherewithal. She's not seen as a partner and what got her elected will not allow for her to be seen as one. Which will make things as I said in my OP

Slaughterhouses used to be on the South side.

Now city officials tell the Hare Krishnas, "You can only have three hundred people in your parade." So they're going over to Naperville.

I went down there several times and they had to parade me through the park with people telling them not to.

I should get them to do it again and have us all arrested.

We'd be going down the street afterward and police would question us and then we'd all be in handcuffs.

But I'm not that ambitious.

No more bus rides to Chicago for me (have to walk, after the asteroid).
