The reason TYT has been shifting to the right:
1) Cenk violated the cardinal rule of progressivism, which is in the name 'progressive'. You have to keep pace with changes in society, with culture, and with the acceptance of others. You have to be open to change, and growing as a person. If you start adopting right-wing and reactionary reasons for NOT changing with the times, you're no longer progressive. You're barely a moderate liberal, and I'd frankly say you're conservative-leaning (in the sense that conservatives seek to maintain the status quo and their place in it). And when you start punching down on the homeless, on trans people, on immigrants, you're only a few sips of Kool-aid away from being a right-wing reactionary. Being progressive, definitionally, means that the movement does not begin and end with your viewpoints NOW and cannot move an inch further. It's not about purity, it's about progress.
2) The rise of Left-Wing Media. These channels are small, but they are eating TYT's lunch. The Vanguard, The Majority Report, Humanist Report, Rational National. Sometimes Secular Talk, and maybe Novara Media. And for news, there's Democracy Now (Amy Goodman is a freakin hero). These guys all do the job better. You have new people, new viewpoints, and these people represent progressivism better than a 54 year old who REFUSES to change, and simply lashes out at these channels for (again) eating his lunch and making him look outdated. That doesn't mean age is disqualifying. Sam Seder (Majority Report) is 58 and he's kicking Cenk's ass on progressive values, consistently. You have to be willing to change and grow with the times or get another job.
3) Being a Big and Successful PROGRESSIVE Channel is NOT really possible. There is a definite limit as to how large and successful a progressive media channel and organization can become. There's no billionaire bankrolling (like on the right-wing), and big money interests are inherently aligned against you. That just comes with the territory. TYT tried to be a big media organization. Then they started taking money from non-progressive sources, aligning with non-progressive figures, and are now advertising some shady stuff. Simply put, there's not really any easy money on the left in the media ecosphere, and you have to accept that. Every penny is hard-earned and requires dedication to the cause. You start playing footsy with unsavory people, viewpoints and causes, the audience can smell it and the viewership with drop like a stone. Forcing you to go further right to compensate, both for financial survival and because you're now just a bitter person.
4) Strike Three and you're OUT. Dave Rubin emerged from the embryotic sack of TYT to become a right-wing grifter. As did Jimmy Dore. Now we have Ana Kasparian going down the exact same path. Sad day for progressives, but it speaks to the crucible of time and how committed you are to your values. Sam Seder, by contrast, has been doing this for -- what, 20 years? He's the Gandalf in this race, staying true to his principles, whereas the other Istari have gone in different directions and ultimately failed.
