The design purpose of handguns is for self defense by wounding or killing an attacker and, unfortunately, they are also used quite broadly in murder and other crimes.
The design purpose of rifles is to kill animals, sometimes for food, but way too often for supposed “sport”.
The design purpose of assault style weapons such as the AR-15 is to kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time due to very lethal bullets, large magazines, and quite rapid fire. Again, unfortunately, the purpose of the design has indeed been proven very effective by way too many mass murderers.

The design purpose of guns is to fire a projectile at enormous speeds.

Nothing else.

I own a Ruger PC Carbine. It was designed specifically to kill people. It can be used at short range to hunt deer, but no one would recommend it for that purpose. It would be ok for smaller predators and varmints, I suppose. But it was designed to back up a pistol, using the same magazine.

The PC carbine, designed for killing people, is not a AR15 platform, doesn’t fire “very lethal bullets,” as it fires 9mm pistol rounds. It also only has a 17 round magazine. Fire rate is pretty good. In some states it is classified an assault weapon.

On the other hand, the Ruger mini-14 fires the same 5.56mm round as the M16, with same rate of fire and a 30 round magazine. But it not an AR platform and as never been considered an assault weapon (except if equipped with a folding stock).

To spell out my point: the design qualities you list as good only for for killing people as quickly as possible can be present in rifles not designed for killing people and absent in those that are designed for killing people.

So which do you consider more relevant: purpose of the design or qualities of the design?

And for fun, I’d like to point out that the rapier was designed specifically and solely for murdering people in a duel. One on one, sword only, it is unmatched at killing. Useless for hunting or warfare, though. So what should its legal status be? Banned as it’s only design function is for dueling, or legal because nobody duels with rapiers now?

Then why are they used so often to kill people—around 40,000 times each year in this nation.

Thank you for those clarifications, but the overall GENERAL claim in the OP remains.

Many possible answers. One is that the purpose of guns is to make weaklings feel 'manly'.

what is a browning bt99 designed for?

Why do you keep repeating along ago proven lie?
Again, unfortunately, the purpose of the design has indeed been proven very effective by way too many mass murderers.
No it hasn’t. As you were shown in the other moronic thread you started.

Then why are they used so often to kill people—around 40,000 times each year in this nation.
They aren’t. Half of the number are suicides. 400,000,000+ million firearms in the US. 20,000 or so homicides with them. AR’s used in less than 1% of those. Bare hands and feet kill more people annually than all rifles of any kind combined.

That should indicate to you that the user determines the purpose. You cite a number that includes homicides, suicides and accidents all in one. Did all those users have the same purpose for their gun?

You're looking at the purpose that very few guns are used for, and trying to argue that is the primary purpose of guns. It's very weird that you can't see the quite obvious problem with that.

Nonsense. The AR-15 is the civilian version of a rifle designed for use by infantrymen. Infantrymen mostly use their rifles to suppress enemies at 300+ meters. They usually carry 200-300 rounds with them, which often have to last in firefights spanning hours. They most certainly do not run around trying to "kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time." It's not really your fault for believing this nonsense, however, given that everything you ever knew about firearms and their use was probably learned from Rambo 2 and similar garbage movies.

The CLAIM of your OP has been refuted.
Tired of your repetitive standard NRA talking point nonsense. Bye.

Don't you just love watsup's debating style: he starts idiotic threat after idiotic thread mindlessly obsessing over AR15s. When people respond pointing out how idiotic his threads are, he "rebuts" them by spewing his substance-free, robotic talking points. This ironically includes complaining about people repeating NRA talking points.

What a truly silly statement. What is the design purpose and use of airplanes?
We weren’t talking about airplanes or toasters. We were talking about fire arms.

other than some specialized competition guns, I can’t think of any gun that has only one intended purpose.

You probably should at least know what you are talking about before starting a thread like this if you want to get people to pay attention.

Unfortunately you clearly don’t.
But then that’s pretty normal for you.

But at least you are good for a laugh.

“The design purpose of handguns is to make as much money as possible.”

Nothing amusing about the number of people shot in the USA.

I didn’t say it was. Why the dishonesty.

No one in America is shot because ARs are legal.

You misspelled reality again. But I accept your concession.

Guns were invented as a weapon of war and thus their purpose was to kill people. They can also be used for other things as well.
