This is an interesting discussion. It does appear they have a good case
He has no actual right or. mandate to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
And certainly not punish an orgamisation for regusing to comply with what is just a decree.
He has actually banned the AP from White House press briefings for continuing to call it the Gullf of Mexico. Its a move of stunning pettiness by a child.

I thought that this was just a first amendment issue but they make clear that ifs a fifth issue because the AP werre denied due process.

I future historians will llook at this and shake their heads. A crazy man using public funds to pursue whims and private vendettas while half the world is at war.

Its just so petty.

Maf King Ludwig was possibly the craziest man in history but at least he built pretty castles.

It'll certainly be fun watching the Trump fans on here defend Trump for this ultra petty and pointless bollocks.

Trump is only angry because someone said no to him.
His fragile ego can't handle even the mildest pushback.

Which, historically, has meant DICK......

Trump simply reflects the voters that put him in office

He is officially worse than Johnson. That in the week we learned about his Afghan stray dog airlift.
How petty can you get ?

There is among Trump fans an automatic built in defense mechanism. No one DARE criticize Trump. It is verboten. When one does so they get ridiculed, called names, assigned labels and the anger spills over the top.

There is a reason for this. They are a cult. Anyone can look up the definition of a cult but basically it involves blind fealty to their leader and not tolerating any criticism.

This is a frivolous lawsuit. Trump's renaming of the Gulf may be jingoistic, but the names of places as recognized under US federal law (even if those places are outside of the US) are set by the US Board on Geographic Names, which is part of the Department of the Interior, and that department reports to the President.

As for in-person access to White House press briefings, that is a privilege, not a right.

The sad part, or should I say the unfair to taxpayers' part is the DoJ will be defending him in court. So, we have to pay for Trump's baby temper tantrums.

So Trump can just rename London and everyone just has to go along with the madness?

I don't think this is an "airtight" case.

1st Amendment
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The WH has not restricted the speech of AP. They are free to say whatever they want. The 1st Amendment doesn't require anybody to TALK to the press. If Trump wants to talk to some press and not other press, he has the right to make that decision.
5th Amendment
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
What "due process of law" was not followed? Is there a law that governs which news organizations are allowed to attend press briefings?

Within the context of US law, yes, absolutely. He could rename London "New Karachi" (not without some justification, BTW), and all official US federal documentation referring to that city would need to begin using the new name.

Names are relative. For example, Germans don't call themselves "Germans" or their country "Germany." They call themselves Deutsche and their country Deutschland. China certainly doesn't use the name "Taiwan" or any translation of it, yet we do.

The UK is similarly free to resume calling the US "The Colonies" if they so choose.

That's both stupid and petty and why would any President do that other than because he's never been told no?

He's literally punishing an organisation for refusing to adhere to his wild fever dreams.

This only holds water if you can imagine yourself defending similar behavior by Obama, Clinton or Biden in the same way.
I suspect not.

I've long givien up trying to explain why Trump does things, but why he's doing this particular thing is not the issue. The question is whether his actions are legal, and they most certainly are.

Welcome to politics. He also has the right to invite whomever he wants to attend press briefings.

Of course you suspect not. You can't refute the argument I'm making, and -- good heavens -- you can't acknowledge I'm right, so you have to imagine some character flaw on my part.

The only thing the name change will accomplish is making US map makers spend money now and then spend again when the next administration changes the name beck again as that's what the rest of the world calls it.
It's utterly pointless.

The olny upside is that a few people will have souvanire maps of the era.
