Texas teachers advising students of immigration rights - San Antonio Express-News

A group of Texas educators is taking teaching beyond the classroom - and touching on a hot button issue.
Teachers in Austin's school district have taken to providing information to students on what to do if immigration enforcement agents arrive at their homes or try to question them. Education Austin, a labor group, has given 3,000 members multiple documents, including fliers with explanations of what to say, what not to say and what to do if an immigration agent wants to question students. The members have been giving those items out to students. The Austin American-Statesman reported that some students at the International High School in East Austin got the fliers. But, there's no way to know how many teachers handed out the fliers or whether it was done during school hours. No statistics were available about how many undocumented students are in the Austin school district.

Austin is what happens when Californians are allowed to infest an area...

Re: Texas teachers advising students of immigration rights

This tough stance on immigration will be the liberals' Waterloo.

The overwhelming majority of Americans want comprehensive and thorough vetting of immigrants, and an end to illegal immigration being ignored in liberal states.

Re: Texas teachers advising students of immigration rights

Children should be educated on what do to if the government shows up at the door.

What does that have to do with ICE interrogating kids? Do you think a child should be subjected to answer immigration questions?

Of course, depending on the child, the answer is different.

The plan is to have these kids pass this along to their parents and community.

my conclusion from your post is that you express disapproval of educating students

Dang those California liberals, wanting to interfere with the government questioning kids at random. Can't they just step aside and let the government do its job?

If we can't deport millions of people without stepping on a few individual liberties, then we must ignore individual liberty, right?

Education Austin is a labor union. So while teachers may be doing the handing out, it is not clear if this is being done in school or otherwise.

If otherwise, no big deal. If in school, teacher should be limiting themselves to the 3 R's.

That's a conclusion drawn from the depths of your own imagination to validate your own inadequate views on the world and keep you from understanding, hearing or even gasp, contemplating the positions of others that might challenge your beliefs, knowing deep inside that you built that ideological house on sand.

Re: Texas teachers advising students of immigration rights

Good, they should understand their rights too.

If the children are here illegally ICE may show up at their door

Particularly if papa is a criminal

Or mom, like the Mexican illegal alien in San Antonio who was deported this weekend triggering a big protest

weak try

clearly, your post illustrates an opposition to instructing students

If a child is here illegaly they need to deal with that child's guardian and if someone shows up at the door, I want the children to understand what's going on.

Re: Texas teachers advising students of immigration rights

Good for them for helping the kids they teach be educated.

Re: Texas teachers advising students of immigration rights

The Left has lost the war of Ideas now they are just trying to stuff the ballot box with 3rd world votes.

Austin has become one big liberal funny farm where the patients are all allowed to walk around freely

So it is not surprising that the lib public school teachers are pro illegal alien

But the law is on our side and if ICE has a warrant there is not much the kiddies can do to stop them from arresting the person they came for

Re: Texas teachers advising students of immigration rights

How about finances. Most kids come out of High School and can't handle basic life decisions. I am truly shocked by their lack of understanding of finances. But ya, great use of class time.

No, it opposes teachers being used for political activism. You fail.

and you have just introduced a strawman into this debate
no one has presented that the students can prevent ICE from doing its job
what HAS been presented is that the students - now instructed about their rights and how to exercise them - will be able to do so if/when confronted by ICE
amazes me that people are opposed to educating students about their legal rights

Re: Texas teachers advising students of immigration rights

it opposes teachers instructing their students about the rights they legally possess
why would anyone be opposed to teaching students about their rights

I am not particularly upset that the wacko lib public teachers are counciling the kids about how to resist ICE

Or at least as long as the teachers are not handing out bomb making tutorials

Hopefully their legal rights of the kids will be respected

So if you are expecting me to go ballistic you will be disappoined

The law is on my side and I know we will win sooner or later
