So Texas once again proves it hasn't progressed beyond the 19th century. No abortions after six weeks, even if the woman is a victim of rape or incest. How this can happen in a nation proudly preening itself as the most advanced on the planet is beyond me. Just goes to show how much influence the Talibornagain lunatics have.

Texas sucks...of course. They let born people die as they fret over things that do not even exist.

It always amazes these supposed patriot red states continue to pass blatantly unconstitutional laws.

They’re not unconstitutional in you control the branch in charge of determining what is constitutional.

Remember this is the branch that determined black people weren’t citizens because that was only for white people. The conservative paradise…

With the new Supreme Court, you are lucky that abortion isn't illegal in all 50 states, but give it time.
Well it's hard to say how this might fair in today's SCOTUS. They may uphold this law, which does effectively ban abortion in the vast majority of cases. Heck, some may not even know they're pregnant before it's illegal for them to have an abortion.

I doubt it. Gerrymandering is the most powerful tool elites have to subjugate their people in America thanks to Chief Justice Roberts.
I get that but this is a third rail issue. Nobody wants this.

They want to be the national leader in teen pregnancy. They are so close. This will put them over the top.

I don't think the court will overturn Roe v Wade and galvanize the liberal vote. They will just gut it and make it an empty shell. But then, they're just umpires, calling balls and strikes.

Then it will be up to Washington to pass laws legalizing abortion, but it should galvanize the liberal vote anyways.

Thanks for posting the thread. Last night, I had read that the SCOTUS reaction (or not) to the emergency appeal was soon to occur. From what I was reading last night, it seems this Texas law will now be in effect until (at least) next June, when the Mississippi case ruling is expected?

It may not be unconstitutional for a few reasons. First, the law is not being enforced by the State government but rather opens up providers and those who assist in such abortions to civil suits filed by private citizens. Second, the Roe decision was largely based on the available medical technology of the 1970s and SCOTUS left it open to be revisited based on advances in medical technology.

I think these are two logical points.

First step in overturning Roe V Wade.

They feel they have too much money, so they want to fritter some of it away via lawsuits.

Maybe, but this is 100% levied at halting abortion, even if they're trying to backdoor their approach to it.

The problem with the anti-abortion folk is that they're not pro-life. Want to end abortion? OK, but we need to set up a bunch of stuff first, and probably can't legally end it; you just have to make alternatives look more attractive. We'd have to have medical care provided, we'd need things like paid leave and not for some measly 6 weeks. 12 weeks at the minimum. We'd have to have better funded orphanariums, better adoption methods, open up who can adopt (such as same-sex couples), etc.

Want to end abortion? There's a lot of physical and mental health services that will need to be provided and we need to be able to better care for the children.

I think you're giving them too much credit. This is about controlling women. Nothing more, nothing less. If given their druthers, women in America would be very similar to the women in a Taliban controlled Afghanistan. They want to make America great again by going back to a time where women were little more than property.

I don’t see this law having the reaching impact you describe here, but I do see it restoring some balance to the issue in a smart way. The State may not have a compelling interest in what happens to the fetus, but there are other parties who do and they should have civil recourse for decisions made in a silo by the woman.

It's going to have quite a lot of impact, it's made to be abused and to stop abortion.

There may be people with "compelling interest in the fetus", but less they are the ones carrying the child, they aren't the ones at risk for doing so.

OMG. When not If; someone is going to get hurt.

Texas Right to Life sets up site asking for anonymous tips on people who get or offer abortions

With the Lone Star State's "heartbeat" abortion law poised to take effect September 1, the group Texas Right to Life has set up a website urging people to anonymously turn in alleged violators.

The group's prolifewhistleblower.com site includes an anonymous form to report people who purportedly breach the controversial measure, considered one of the country's most restrictive anti-abortion laws.

The law limits legal access to abortions to two weeks after a missed menstrual cycle, a time when many women don't yet know they're pregnant. What's more, it lets private citizens sue abortion providers and others who help a woman obtain an abortion after six weeks.

As Texas waits for the fate of the law to play out in court, Texas Right to Life's tip site has already attracted the interest of online activists who recommended that people concerned about reproductive rights share fake names to disrupt the data collection.
