How to reduce recidivism is well known. Sadly, most Americans don’t want to go down that path. If we did, it would save us billions of dollars and much untold suffering. You wrote: "the rate of recidivism may come down or you could just continue to treat people like utter shit and the cycle of re-incarceration in for profit prisons will continue forever."
There is no evidence the rate of recidivism will ever come down. And to suggest putting in air conditioning for prisoners will bring that rate down is utter fantasy.
And if recidivist prisoners continue "to treat people (their victims) like utter shit", re-incarceration will be the future of these failed criminals.
Find some other stupid criminals to pity.

Who knows if that type of rehabilitation will work in this country? How to reduce recidivism is well known. Sadly, most Americans don’t want to go down that path. If we did, it would save us billions of dollars and much untold suffering.
Sentencing and Prison Practices in Germany and the Netherlands
Implications for the United States
The U.S. prison population has increased 700 percent in the last 40 years, and state corrections expenditures reached $53.5 billion in 2012. Despite this massive investment in incarceration, the national recidivism rate remains at a stubborn 40 percent—meaning that four in 10 incarcerated people will return to prison within three years of release.
German and Dutch prison systems are organized around central tenets of resocialization and rehabilitation. The U.S. system is organized around the central tenets of incapacitation and retribution.
Germany and the Netherlands incarcerate about one tenth the percentage of their population as opposed to the US.
I encourage everyone to read the full report linked above.
Should our institutions focus on rehabilitation or pure penalty wrt to those convicted of crime?
It’s obvious what those who are gleeful when hearing about the suffering of others feel about that issue.

I would say in this country, since we have so many stupid criminals who end up back in prison, and because of drug abuse problems, have trouble keeping steady employment, or are illiterate, the recidivism problem will never be significantly reduced.
Changing the inmates' innate behavior after many years of various and serious crimes does not seem likely with some of our hardened criminals.
Countries like Germany and the Netherlands have homogeneous populations whereas our country is known for prison populations plagued by Black, Hispanic, and White prison gangs.
Does rehabilitation reduce crime?
Research shows that rehabilitation programs can reduce recidivism by changing inmates' behavior based on their individual needs and risks. For example, inmates are more likely to recidivate if they have drug abuse problems, have trouble keeping steady employment, or are illiterate.

United States added to list of most dangerous countries for journalists for first timeI have to wonder if the US population is 7 times more criminal than it was 40 years ago?
Maybe the EU should add the US to the list of dangerous contries to visit?
There are many low-life criminals that can't be rehabilitated and will end up back in prison because they are dumb criminals. That's what got them in prison in the first place.Considering the conservative prison wardens won't even consider starting a conversation about the issue it's impossible to tell if it will work in the US.
Why wouldn't it work is the real question unless you think there's some specific reason that Americans can't be rehabilitated?
If I was in the EU, I would absolutely avoid shithole cities like San Francisco, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Oakland CA, Portland and Seattle OR, and Cleveland OH.I have to wonder if the US population is 7 times more criminal than it was 40 years ago?

Can Donald Trump, the epitome of a dumb criminal, be rehabilitated? There are many low-life criminals that can't be rehabilitated and will end up back in prison because they are dumb criminals. That's what got them in prison in the first place.
^^^ same guys who supported concentration camps in Nazi Germany and Eastern Europe.Maybe if they would not be criminals, they would be at work in an air-conditioned building. Sympathy: None
Nope! Can Donald Trump, the epitome of a dumb criminal, be rehabilitated?
Is that a serious question or are you just being rhetorical? Can Donald Trump, the epitome of a dumb criminal, be rehabilitated?
I never wonder why criminals return to crime after getting out of prison. The problem is the US treats everyone in prison like they're absolute scum.
The reason many end up back in prison is because it's so hard for excons to get a job or housing.
You put them in a vicious cycle of being released from prison only to have zero support or ability to get money and you wonder why they return to crime?
