How to reduce recidivism is well known. Sadly, most Americans don’t want to go down that path. If we did, it would save us billions of dollars and much untold suffering.

Well, except for all the evidence from other countries who've tried a different aproach to how to deal with prisoners who have lower recidivism.
You seems desperate to keep the current situation and not even consider alternatives which is why the US is where it is.

Who knows if that type of rehabilitation will work in this country?

I would say in this country, since we have so many stupid criminals who end up back in prison, and because of drug abuse problems, have trouble keeping steady employment, or are illiterate, the recidivism problem will never be significantly reduced.
Changing the inmates' innate behavior after many years of various and serious crimes does not seem likely with some of our hardened criminals.
Countries like Germany and the Netherlands have homogeneous populations whereas our country is known for prison populations plagued by Black, Hispanic, and White prison gangs.

I have to wonder if the US population is 7 times more criminal than it was 40 years ago?
Maybe the EU should add the US to the list of dangerous contries to visit?

Considering the conservative prison wardens won't even consider starting a conversation about the issue it's impossible to tell if it will work in the US.

Why wouldn't it work is the real question unless you think there's some specific reason that Americans can't be rehabilitated?

There are many low-life criminals that can't be rehabilitated and will end up back in prison because they are dumb criminals. That's what got them in prison in the first place.

If I was in the EU, I would absolutely avoid shithole cities like San Francisco, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Oakland CA, Portland and Seattle OR, and Cleveland OH.

The problem is the US treats everyone in prison like they're absolute scum.
The reason many end up back in prison is because it's so hard for excons to get a job or housing.
You put them in a vicious cycle of being released from prison only to have zero support or ability to get money and you wonder why they return to crime?

I never wonder why criminals return to crime after getting out of prison.
Like drug addicts, they are addicted to (what they believe) getting money the easy way - taking it from someone else. They see "smash and grab" thieves, fully masked, smashing jewelry store windows and taking expensive jewels right out of the jewel cases. What could be easier?
Why would career criminals be concerned with getting full time jobs when you have DAs in blue cities ready to let criminals off with a slap on the wrist.?
