Tea Partiers more educated than general populace

Tea Party supporters are wealthier and more well-educated than the general public, and are no more or less afraid of falling into a lower socioeconomic class, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

...Asked what they are angry about, Tea Party supporters offered three main concerns: the recent health care overhaul, government spending and a feeling that their opinions are not represented in Washington.

...Of the 18 percent of Americans who identified themselves as supporters, 20 percent, or 4 percent of the general public, said they had given money or attended a Tea Party event, or both. These activists were more likely than supporters generally to describe themselves as very conservative and had more negative views about the economy and Mr. Obama. They were more angry with Washington and intense in their desires for a smaller federal government and deficit...



and my personal favorite; buried without mention (hey, it's the NYT after all)

52% of the General Public says Barack Obama's policies are moving the country towards socialism
 
And not surprisingly...the majority of them also have JOBS...unlike the crippled and dependent apthetic little pets that advocate momma gov nursing and providing for them because the pooor widdle dears cant manage on their own.

What a shocker...people that actually have demonstrated an a bility to succeed objecting to a majority of crippled and dependent pets sucking off their resources.
 
Yet almost half of them earn so little as to pay no taxes.

“I just feel he’s getting away from what America is,” said Kathy Mayhugh, 67, a retired medical transcriber in Jacksonville. “He’s a socialist. And to tell you the truth, I think he’s a Muslim and trying to head us in that direction, I don’t care what he says. He’s been in office over a year and can’t find a church to go to. That doesn’t say much for him.”

“That’s a conundrum, isn’t it?” asked Jodine White, 62, of Rocklin, Calif. “I don’t know what to say. Maybe I don’t want smaller government. I guess I want smaller government and my Social Security.” She added, “I didn’t look at it from the perspective of losing things I need. I think I’ve changed my mind.”

I am sorry, but I have to agree with the two bold quotes. It's irritating to come with the phrase "tea party wisdom" before hand because it is just more partisan rubbish, but there was an article in the Times about how one of the head guys in the Tea Party gets Medicare. He's totally against health care reform, but he gets money from a government funded health care system.

It's contradictory situation and yet they don't realize it. They are totally fine with receiving social security and medicare, but they are not alright with others receiving it. Now, whether this is a generalization or not, I can't honestly say. But, if you're against a big government, stop receiving Social Security and medicare. Lead by example.

You do realize that there's no hypocrisy in supporting one program and not supporting a different one?
 
The hypocrisy is in the argument. "The government shouldn't be involved in our lives and needs to be smaller!" yells a Tea Party supporter. "So, are you willing to give up your Social Security?" asks a government individual. "No, but we need it to be smaller!" Where's the sacrifice? Why is it that government only has to be so small that these individuals can still receive money from the Nanny State?

For one thing, Social Security and Medicare are funded by people paying into it, so it's not "money from the Nanny State". And what's your problem with someone who says that government should be smaller, and Social Security should be smaller? That's not even something that can reasonably be twisted as being hypocritical.

And again, there's no hypocrisy in supporting SOME government programs, and not supporting others, when the net effect is a support of smaller government. They're not advocating getting rid of the military, or police force, etc. They're not anarchists. Many of them DO want to privatize Social Security and Medicare, though, but that's beside the point.
 
There's nothing wrong with it, but one of the principles they are against is health care for everyone, but they take Medicare like it is nothing. Boo on the idea that everyone should get health care, but damn you if you try to take my medicare away. I think Social Security and Medicare shouldn't be around, but considering that two of the LARGEST parts of the government are those nanny state programs -- Medicare and Social Security -- it is hypocritcal that they are willing to accept that, but then are complaining about health care for other people. Why not get rid of everything and go back to what the Constitutional supposedly said? Just saying...

I always laugh when I see a claim that "liberals are smarter" or "conservatives are smarter". Now, "tea partiers" are smarter. You know who I think is smarter? Folks who understand that any of those claims are nothing but partisan foolishness.

The claim was that tea partiers were, on average, more EDUCATED, which I'm skeptical of but which is very possible. Being educated, though, is different from being smart.

There is some evidence that liberals have a slightly higher average IQ than conservatives... I am VERY skeptical of this, but wouldn't be surprised if it was actually true. But then, "smarter" is a relative term... it may not be measurable like IQ.

OK, then replace the word "smart" with the words "more educated" and I STILL stand by my post. Nothing more than partisan foolishness and chest-thumping.

But the thing is, we were being told over and over from certain liberals that the tea party bunch were uneducated nimrods... I don't think most people are flaunting this as being better than everyone, but rather in the face of those liberals whose narrative is crushed if this is true.

Which only proves no matter how educated you are, you can still toss aside critical thinking skills for mindless propaganda that confirms your own person prejudices....

The Heaven's Gate Hale-Bopp comet group were all very educated as well. But one charismatic leader (Beck/Hannity) was able to get them drink the kool-aide, as it were.

I notices you left out a few other points reported in the same article about the so-called intelligence of the Teabaggers.:2wave:
