Sen. Tammy Duckworth in the running to become Biden's VP pick

You can officially add Duckworth to the finalist list. The NYP and other news outlets are reporting that Tammy Duckworth was recently interviewed by Joe Biden for the Vice President spot.

For those of you unfamiliar with her, she was born in Bangkok Thailand. Her father was a U.S military veteran. She served in the military between 1990 and 2004. In November of 2004, her helicopter was hit by a grenade in the Iraq War, and she lost both her legs and sustained a major injury in her right arm. Since 2017, she's been a U.S Senator from the state of Illinois.

What do you guys think of her chances?

Personally I think it would be a great pick for him. She brings a lot of experience to the table: lived in Asia, served in combat, been an administrator for Veterans Affairs offices, and served in both the house and the senate. Picking her means, he would get somebody 26 years younger than him (Biden 78 in January, Duckworth 52 in January) and highly qualified for the position.

The critical point when picking a sitting U.S. Senator for Veep is, "Will the vacant seat remain in Dem control"?

In this case with J.B. Pritzker not up for election, I'm good with Biden picking Duckworth. She won't bring a state though, since Illinois is already in the bag.

I know a bit about Senator Duckworth and would be fully onboard with her as a potential running mate for VP.

Vacancies in the United States Senate

Back in 2009, then governor Rod Blagojevich appointed Roland Burris to fill in for the remaining years of Obama's Senate seat. He served from January of 2009 to November of 2010. If Duckworth were to be picked, Pritzker would pick a replacement to serve out the remaining of the term. Basically until November of 2022.

Yes, I'm aware, which is why I made my comment. And unless there's some huge change in Illinois' demographics, the seat will remain Dem in 2023.

I thought she should have ran for President. If you watch her in interviews, she comes across as a pretty tough cookie and says whatever is on the top of her mind.

Progressives are not a big fan of hers. She took a shot at precious AOC and said, "Her future is in the Bronx", essentially criticizing her for being ideological rather than practical and pragmatic.

I think Biden is most likely looking for somebody who shares his left-of-center, practical ideology, and Duckworth fits that bill.

It's a pretty safe seat. Unless the current replacement gets involved in a scandal, it's a pretty safe. Illinois is a reliable blue state.
