The MAHA commission’s first report, released in May, identified ultraprocessed foods, which make up 62 percent of the calories consumed by children 18 and younger in the United States, as “detrimental to children’s health.”
Many experts agreed with that initial assessment and said it would take government regulations — like taxes on sugary drinks, warning labels on unhealthy foods and strong limits on marketing them to children — to address it.
But the policy strategies outlined in today’s report are “all promises and no teeth,” said Barry Popkin, a professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health.
