Taiwan has unveiled its first domestically-made submarine as it bolsters its defences against a possible Chinese attack.
President Tsai Ing-wen presided over the launch ceremony in the port city of Kaohsiung on Thursday.
US officials have warned that China could be militarily capable of mounting an invasion within the next few years.

US military and intelligence officials have given varying timelines for a possible Chinese invasion.
One date put forth recently is 2027 - Chinese President Xi Jinping is believed to have told his military to be operationally capable of mounting an invasion by that year.

So much for the theory I've read elsewhere on this forum that Taiwan is part of China...

The sub will have cost billions but I think Taiwan should rapidly learn from Ukraine's use of drones at sea, on land and in the air if and when China decides it can risk invading Taiwan.

A diesel boat is every bit as formidable as any nuke boat. The only difference being propulsion. They can implement any of the electronics and weaponry that a nuke boat has.

Taiwan is small island and their government isn't trying to project military power at long range.

Diesel/Battery propulsion with AIP technology is a perfect fit for their needs.
