Now that I have your attention ...

Twenty-four year old Dontray Mills buys 27 firearms - to be sold to others. Most of them are prohibited from owning a weapon. Mills is brought-up on 55 counts, facing a maximum of 550 years in prison and nearly $14 million in fines.

Mr. Mills pleads guilty to one (1) charge, and a federal judge gives him probation.

We need more gun laws! «/sarc»

Well, if ATF can do it then why not Dontray?

On Wednesday, he was sentenced. As part of the plea bargain, prosecutors agreed with the one year of probation.

Those prosecutors' boss is an Obama appointed US Attorney. I suspect that the USA agreed to this sentence that his line AUSAs were OK with.

Dayem!

If I'm ever in a jam - I want this guy's lawyer!!!

actually its probably pretty common. especially if the gun runner ratted a bunch of people out. It suggests he had no record. but the point remains, this was an Obama administration appointed US Attorney who cut the deal. I will note that the ton of years is not realistic-the judge gets a Pre sentence investigation report and that report examines what are called the US Sentencing Guidelines that evaluate the statutory sentences available, the criminal history of the defendant, his "relevant conduct", his acceptance of responsibility etc, and comes up with a recommended sentence.

The real problem for those who want more gun laws etc is the fact that the Brady bunch brays constantly about all the "FELONS STOPPED" by the Brady bill and almost NONE of them are ever prosecuted for what is a slam dunk case of perjury. THE ONLY time the Background check is done is if you swear on form 4473 YOU CAN OWN A FIREARM. IF you ADMIT you are a felon etc, you are denied on the spot and the background check never happens

Actually, my reply was a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I also suspect he had a reasonably clean record and cooperated (read: ratted out) fully.

Back when I lived in the city, in some circles it was common knowledge 'giving up a gun or two' was a nearly sure way to walk from most misdemeanors and even some low level non-violent victimless felonies (ex: small time personal coke possession).

I once had a cleaned-up addict co-worker who claimed he had the police drive him around while he falsely pointed at several random apartments to get out of a small-time heroin and paraphernalia rap; despite his distant sordid past, this guy was a pretty straight-up legit individual, and I have no reason to doubt him.

Early this week, I talked about this very subject with a city cop friend of mine, and apparently it still occurs.

Cops fear guns in the hands of those that want to hurt them, and they're willing to barter.

Perhaps this came into play here ...

WTF is the problem?

Oh! I forgot we are all supposed run around like headless chickens shouting, take them from the right hands.

So OK how do you tell who has the right hands and why punish others becasue you CANNOT tell who will do what in the future.

Is fear not a wonderful law maker that every oppressive law has in common.
