This past week, George Will and Steve Schmidt, two long, long standing Republicans abjured the GOP for one and only one reason: The GOP's and Trump's turpitude.

29 years and nine months ago I registered to vote and became a member of The Republican Party which was founded in 1854 to oppose slavery and stand for the dignity of human life.

Today I renounce my membership in the Republican Party. It is fully the party of Trump. It is corrupt, indecent and immoral. With the exception of a few Governors like Baker, Hogan and Kasich it is filled with feckless cowards who disgrace and dishonor the legacies of the party’s greatest leaders. This child separation policy is connected to the worst abuses of humanity in our history. It is connected by the same evil that separated families during slavery and dislocated tribes and broke up Native American families. It is immoral and must be repudiated.

On Ronald Reagan’s grave are these words. “ I know in my heart that man is good. That what is right will always eventually triumph and there is purpose and worth to each and every life.” He would be ashamed of McConnell and Ryan and all the rest while this corrupt government establishes internment camps for babies. Everyone of these complicit leaders will carry this shame through history. There legacies will be ones of well earned ignominy. They have disgraced their country and brought dishonor to the Party of Lincoln.

I have spent much of my life working in GOP politics. I have always believed that both parties were two of the most important institutions to the advancement of human freedom and dignity in the history of the world. Today the GOP has become a danger to our democracy and values. This Independent voter will be aligned with the only party left in America that stands for what is right and decent and remains fidelitous to our Republic, objective truth, the rule of law and our Allies. That party is the Democratic Party.
-- Steve Schmidt

It is always good to see a man of conscience speak out! Bravo!

Oh please both were rabid never Trumpers from day one. Yawn again......
Have you ever listened to Schmidt on Morning Joe? If you have it will be very
clear what is going on.

The Bushes are still rabid Never-Trumpers. The state of Utah seems to be rabid Never-Trumpers.

Pat Buchanan and Rand Paul are Libertarians and one just doesn't know who they'll throw their support to. Some things just don't change.

Schmidt is one of the few political talking heads that is always well spoken and has something of value to say. He is intelligent and very much aware of what America is and what is happening to it under Trump.

While I've heard plenty of folks laud and decry Schmidt's remarks. I have yet to hear anyone present a cogent refutation of his basis for arriving at his decision about the GOP.

There's another way to look at the exodus of people from the GOP...To the extent they align with the Democratic party, they may effect change in that party, making it more conservative than it is. They may even foment within it the sort of schism that roils the GOP.

I'm truly surprised that Republicans have blindly followed this narcissistic monster with their heads buried into the sand.
The Party of Lincoln, the GOP no longer exist!

Dear, perhaps you should actually read the post.

He pretended to know what Reagan would think.

Come on, you can do better than that.

What was there in what we know about what Reagan believed that would indicate he would be a Trumpkin?

I wouldn't indicate either way -- it's dishonest.

Why is it dishonest to apply the beliefs and action of Reagan to the beliefs and actions of Trump? I would suggest that is what Schmidt is doing and there is nothing dishonest about it.

So Trump is a bridge too far but Palin was fit to be VP? Okay.

Glad people are calling Trump out, but why did they help it get this bad in the first place?

Because it's a practice in dishonest to put words in the mouths of the dead. We simply don't know what they would make of our current circumstances -- they would likely have evolved alongside the rest of society and have the benefit of hindsight at this point.

Reagan was a moral man.
Trump is a immoral heartless narcissist.
Reagan would be sick if he knew Trump was President

He has all the self-righteousness necessary to qualify for the democrat party.

Trump is the result of two things; the leftward shift of the Democrats and the fecklessness of the GOP. The answer to Trump isn't to move the GOP leftward or abandon it. It is to move it back to conscientious conservatism. The GOP needs hard working, principled conservatives willing to actually get things done. Trump has gathered together conservative ideas and wrapped them up in populism and brash aggressiveness. After Bush and the weak efforts to beat Obama, people responded to it, including quite a few blue collar Democrats. Anyone leaving the GOP and joining the Dems is jumping from the frying pan into the fire. They will either have to give up their conservatism or be completely marginalized.

Schmidt has been anti Trump from the beginning. His leaving the GOP is just grandstanding and him looking for approval from his pals at MSNBC

It's simple if Republicans want to save their party, they have to Dump Trump!
In the end Trump is more a disaster to the GOP then to Democrats.

Schmidt should stay a Republican and be Anti-Trump

I do not disagree that such a practice can be dishonest. And when it is done, one must look closely at it. But in the case of Schmidt, I do believe he makes a very thorough and reasonable case that the party of Reagan is not the party of Trump and Reagan would not recognize it today.

You talk about opinion evolving over time. Why then has George Wills not evolved to accept Trump? Why hasn't the recently departed Charles Krauthammer not evolved to do the same? What about Nicole Wallace? What about Joe Scarborough? Lots and lots of Reagan era and Bush era people simply have not evolved to accept Trump.

I agree with that. I would also point out that Reagan was a man of governmental experience as Governor of our largest state while Trump is verdant-government as an institution. Sure Reagan was a conservative who wanted smaller government in many areas - but he had respect for it as an institution. Trump has no such respect.

In fact. Trump respects nothing other than Trump. he uses everything like toilet paper.
