Speed cameras have dubious legality in many places here in the States, but over in Europe they're an ugly fact of life. Now they're getting smarter, and the first is going into deployment in Finland. It's called ASSET, the Advanced Safety and Driver Support for Essential Road Transport, which confusingly abbreviates to ASDSERT and is the product of £7 million in government funding and years of development. Each of the £50,000 (about $80,000) cameras can naturally tell just how fast you're going and, if you're speeding, take a picture of you and your license plate number. That's just the beginning. It can also look up the status of your insurance, tell if you're wearing a seatbelt, and ding you for tailgaiting, all while sitting alone on the side of the road, relying on a wireless data connection and an internal generator to be totally self-sufficient. Whether or not this is scary depends largely on your propensity for speed, but know that the things will be getting built into police cars soon and will shortly be heading over here to our big, wide American highways

Don't see a thing wrong with it. As to checking insurance???? YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully, it can also tell if you're driving on a suspended.
 
Looks as though all that taxpayer-funded university research is really paying off for the state. Now they can steal money with improved speed and efficiency. Although, what's this calling the police crap? Why not just equip the robot with it's own machine gun to threaten the citizens directly? That would really be cool!

What exactly is the issue with this technology or with speed cameras in general?
 
I have no problem with it, IF there is a sign on the intersection that states that a camera (with enhanced abilities) is present.

The main goal here should be to get people to not run lights and to wear their seat belts, not make money off tickets.

thereby shifting financial risk to society after you run
out of money paying for damages you are liable for.

Oh, and Finland is in Europe, not in the USA, so the
pioneering use of this useful technical asset, if it was
actually an abridgement of freedom (and it is not),
would not be a measure of relative Eurpean freedom,
as only an ignorant dickhead, presumably like you, would have it.

This isn't about safety but revenue. I don't like the idea of automated systems for this for those reasons. A patrol officer can pursue someone who is behaving dangerously. This is just glorified photo radar.

People who obey the law and don't drive like idiot maniacs have nothing to fear from this technology.

You are damn right! This has very very VERY little to do with safety. Its all about revenue. Even the police know that! WAKE UP people! All over Chicago (of all places) these Red Light Cameras are being banned in certain cities because the City Counsil ALONG with Public Safety knows its all about generating revenue and THEY are not immune to them. They cant talk their way out of tickets because they know the police officer that pulled them over.

On top of THAT, I for one do NOT want to live in a Police State! (Nanny State)

The problem with this technology is that it trashes the whole attitude of "reasonable suspicion" and "probable cause" and assumes that everyone is guilty, so let's put machines there to watch the subjects. That, and speeding tickets are all about money, as well as traffic cameras. If speeding tickets weren't about money, you'd just get points on your license and no fines would be involved.
 

Firstly in some societies losing a license ****S people over.
Secondly reasonable suspicion and probable cause are protocols for police to follow.
Placing machines who react when you break the parameters of the law is not assumption of guilt. They merely prove guilt when you break the law and on no other occasion.

The laws have not been cooked to fool people into breaching traffic law by accident unfairly and milking money out of people. Believe it or not they have common sense and consensus in europe as well.

Just like with any technology, the innocent are not exempt from being impacted or affected. Doesn't mean it will happen often, but this is naive thinking at best.

Stop light cameras have been proven to cause more rear end accidents. If they want safety make the yellow lights a few seconds longer and accidents decrease.

It requires for the cameras to be deployed at dangerous stoplights that require them. A few more seconds of yellow is good, but even then there will be a general learning curve of people getting used to the change. Also... I think the camera near my house lets you run a red light for a good 1-2 seconds after its turned red before the other light turns green.
 

When red light cameras are installed they lessen the time of the yellow because it is about the money not safety.

Incorrect supposition on your part. Unless you have a source that the government shortened the yellow lights, which would be likely criminal. A simple comparison between intersection yellow light times would be all that was needed to find this out.


Also the spray should be illegal.
