Spanking: Is it still an effective method of discipline?

Your attitudes about spanking

Sadistic.
I am not sure how many of our resident Righties were parents, or how their kids (if they had any) turned out. But I would be very very frightened for any kids growing up in a household with the kinds of discipline being suggested by some on this topic.

how so?

5 or 10 wacks whatever and yur done.

sitting in the corner, 1 or 2 hours...........no contest: give me the wacks.

people we need to think things thru better than that. wearing a Left wing bumper sticker hardly qualifies in the Thinking department.

some comments truly are Wacked out.

Yours are. I taught elementary ed for 20+ years and never once thought to physically discipline a student. I think your religious beliefs made you sick, perhaps you really work for Satan?

Are you saying you are anti-vaccine?

Because there is only ONE vaccine - which is the one that isn't a vaccine.. If you question the effectiveness of it, then you are a heretic anti-vax

Um, modern science?

How many genders are there? What does a woman carry during gestation?

There is an anti-science party, all right.

I can't remember any time that my three year old was in a position to run into the street. At that age he was never outside unsupervised and had also learned that he could only go in the street holding an adult's hand. I guess a child might run into the street to chase a ball, but I think that would be on the parent to not allow such activity near a street.

I had a dog that occasionally would run into the street to chase cars. I doubt that spanking her would have changed that behavior.

Dogs are especially tuned to respond to physical correction. Look at a pack for a minute or two and it will become obvious.

Just because we have made arbitrary decisions about how things should be done *now*, it doesn't mean we can overwrite nature.

If this poll were taken in the real world - not the radical left echo chamber of DP - the results would be vastly different. You DO grasp this, don't you?
I’d be more willing to bet it’s a generational difference with Gen X being the change where you see older than Gen X more apt to turn towards spanking and hitting a child and Gen X and younger not using corporal punishment/spanking.

Older Gen X leaning more in the spanking column and younger Gen X more in the not.

I never spanked my kids. I redirected them or put them in time out. Both were pleasers. My grandson has been in time out so many times he responds to a side eye, cries and sits on the time out step automatically by his own volition. He has an internal timer on how long to sit, gets up and gives us a hug. Time outs are now more infrequent.

Demagogues calling spanking "beating a child" have no credibility.
Lol, beating a child is beating a child. People that do this should face jail.
Yes I know they are just ignorant and unskilled at parenting people but it must be stopped so they MUST face jail time.

Listen and learn from me.

Well folks, what can I say? I asked the question, we all got the answers.

My vote would have gone to no spanking but fall short of outright outlawing it.

Still, threads like this one exposes who believes in physical force and is ok with physical abuse.

Odd though, the arguments FOR spanking coming almost entirely from a particular demographic.

Doesn't matter what I think or what the data shows about the effects of spanking, those who want to "control" their kids figure that spanking (and other forms of physical discipline) are required.

Nah

I think it is cultural not generational. Red Hat's are morons are more apt to beat their kids.

well some kids are compliant.

i wasn't and mom didn't show much affection to the children. it takes more than spanking to raise a child, it takes love also.

blessings.

Why do you call it spanking? It is child beating.

If you did this to a fully grown adult would it be called spanking? **** no.
It's worst to do this to a defenseless child.

Oh wow, I never could have predicted THAT reply.

You DO know there are other ways of instilling discipline without physical force, right? Oh sorry, I should have realize the answer before I asked the question
unlike some people responding here I had kids - no, spanking is very much needed

ever smacked a little hand for reaching for something when you said no ? I guess that's physical abuse too ?

ever seen a women breast feeding get a hard bite down from a teething baby? I guess that's mental abuse the way the woman responds ?

liberals crack me up

absolutely it is

a good parent is one who protects their kids and how do you teach your 4 year old to not run out into traffic? you think a reasonable honest discussion will get you there? lol

Spraying kids with DDT probably wouldn't hurt them at all. It's harmless to humans. And the claims that it caused eggshells of eagles and other raptors to thin and break has largely been debunked.

why was it banned ?

oh ... yeah ...
Environmental and Health Concerns:
    • DDT is toxic to various organisms, including marine animals, birds, and humans.
    • It accumulates in the food chain and can cause reproductive problems, developmental issues, and potentially lead to cancer in humans.
    • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned DDT in 1972.
    • Despite the ban, DDT and its breakdown products, like DDE, persist in the environment and can still be found in food and human tissues.
    • Some studies suggest that exposure to DDT may have long-term health effects that can last for multiple generations.

It is easier for some people to beat their kids than to admit that they are failing as parents.

Just look at how they defend their child beating ways by blaming the libs.

If this were the real world, you'd still be beating a child.

A good parent holds a 4 year old hand so they can't run into traffic.
Duh

You don't wait for them to run out then beat them

This is exactly what it is. Time Outs and Saying No and not giving it to tantrums works perfectly fine. It can take a lot of time and even more patience, but it is effective, and kids learn really fast what the boundaries are.

It also strengthens the bond and in particular the safety & security relationship.

In my case my partner's boy would turn to me in times of doubt. I was the rule maker who never changed the rules and thus became more trusted to do what was 'right' in their minds. It has been my experience that children lean into the disciplinarian when that individual has created a trusted relationship. With vague rules and changing discipline levels children become confused and often act out as a means of communicating that confusion.

To be honest I took much of my cue on how to handle the kid from my dog who would play endlessly with the boy while at the same time 'herding' him in the yard where it was safe.
