Spanish сort rules Franco fascist regime did not commit crimes against humanity

If one knows nothing of Spain, one shouldn't be writing about it.

From same article
The Court argued against Iglesias’ appeal on the basis that the statute of limitations on the “presumed crimes” has been reached. In addition, the 1977 Amnesty Law, which was backed by the PCE during the Transition, protects all crimes committed by the fascist regime.

O.K. Franco clean now. Hitler and Mussolini get ready.
This is depressing news. Is it really up to a Spanish court to decide on crimes against humanity committed by a Spanish dictatorship?

Justice, not coming to a theatre near you anytime soon.

Isn't it the old Amnesty Law that still protect people from Fascist era crimes, rather than no crimes comitted. Basically because of the Amnesty Law the court can't pursue them.

Correct.

It was passed in 1977 to stabilize the transition to democracy by hopefully preventing a right wing coup.

2 years after Franco's death and the somewhat unexpected turnaround of his designated successor (King Juan Carlos I) from (stipulated by Franco) continued dictatorship to democracy.

The dangers of the right wing to once again overthrow the elected government were high and still very much alive, as the attempted but failed coup d'état of 1981 was to show.

A Spanish court will do nothing because of the Amnesty law which is why the European Court of Human Rights is the better option. If after WWII an Amnesty Law was allowed to exist in Germany then no Nazis would have been prosecuted. The Allies would not have permitted this.

Agreed. How popular is the 'Vox' party? Are they extreme or just conservative?
The conservatives in Spain belong to the Partido Popular (PP) who are in opposition now and the Socialists are the main party in power. They have been silent on this matter. Vox is a far right party and racist against Muslim immigrants. It is a new populist group founded in 2013 and a break away from the PP and they are also in opposition.

Thank you

True enough, yet, other than in Germany, the Spanish transition from dictatorship to democracy was not enforced by the Allies, simply because they had no say in it (never having occupied Spain).

The credit goes alone to Spanish society with some help from the designated monarchial dictator, equally designated to succeed Franco with policies that were not supposed to change.

Who then turned things totally upside down by pushing the whole thing in the opposite direction of what Franco had intended.

Weren't you born yet in those years?

I would also say, that the PP were the spiritual successor to the Franco party FE de las JONS, with lots of former Franco people being members of PP over the last 30 years. However many of those people have left PP now, to form VOX... and that can be seen in VOX policies on women, race, sexuality and so on. Basically a carbon copy of the old Franco policies.
