Boris Spassky, a Soviet-era chess grand master who lost his world champion title in 1972 to American Bobby Fischer in one of the most famous duels in the history of the game as well as a metaphor for the competition for Cold War supremacy, died Feb. 27 in Moscow. He was 88

Much credit for igniting the “Fischer Craze” goes to Lyman, who teamed with TV executive Mike Chase, director of operations for the New York Network of the State University of New York, to bring the 1972 match live to a mass audience. Chase, who had been one of Lyman’s chess students, set up an open phone line to Reykjavik, obtained several large chessboards, and positioned Lyman in an available studio in Albany, the state capital.

Oh wow. Thanks for posting this, I have a love for chess although I'm not an esp. good player.

my pleasure. I used to play tournament chess ( you get in groups of similar ratings) and was always around 1600
The best grandmasters and champs are close to 3000!

Im too old to compete but still love to play. here's the best online site for learning to improve and play at your level as well
(PS online is fun, but nothing is like a real chessboard and swooping up the captured piece while dropping yours on the square with 1 hand)
