South Africa’s Vice-President Paul Mashatile says Putin should stay away from the BRICS summit in South Africa next month as he would get arrested there due to the ICC warrant.

Well, England had the guts to (briefly) detain Dictator Pinochet of Chile.

It was the beginning of the end of that tyrant's rule.

So it would be beautiful if South Africa had the guts to (briefly) detain the War Criminal.

But if push comes to shove (if the War Criminal actually has the gall to land in South Africa), I bet you dollars to donuts that South African officials will meekly accept him.

That wouldnt have happened before the end of the Cold War. With the end of the Cold War Pinochet and many others lost their usefuleness as assets against the Soviet Union. With the increasing polarisation of the world it is unlikely a Pinochet today would be cast adrift just so he winds up in the protection of Putin

For better or for worse many in the third world, including South Africa, see a multipolar world- which they favour- as impossible if Russia were to collapse.

The Saudis- allies of the west- have quite a bit to answer for their military campaigns in Yemen, Libya, Syria. But there is no arrest warrant for them. It leaves the impression arrest warrants are for criminals who are not western allies

Who would provide his security from any assassination attempt I wonder?

You're right.

I thought South Africa finds his prospective visit infelicitous because he is an official "war criminal."

But maybe S.A. officials worry about the notoriety that would come with his being terminated by outside forces.

Despite SA President Ramaphosa being in Putin's vest pocket, it seems Putey didn't want to press the issue of him being a wanted war criminal.
