I used to be more hard-core conservative when I first joined. Not anymore. My stances are pretty moderate nowadays. I haven't changed many of them, just the party and it's base went nuts.
Fact is, the right went nuts when Obama was president and now the left are nuts since Trump has become president.
I'm going to poke a hole in that right now.
I'm not going nuts just because I'm liberal, I truly think Trump and many of the current GOP are dangerous.
If I had a magic wand and the only thing it could do was make Richard Nixon President again, I'd wave it in a New York second.
And if Barry Goldwater had to be Speaker of the House I'd wave it again.
Remember, I identify as a liberal, but at least I would know that, compared to Trump, we'd have two "relatively sane" people in charge.
Yes, even Nixon is as solid as a rock compared to Trump, and everyone knew he was nucking futz, but Trump is like Nixon on steroids.
And I bet there are quite a few liberal people on this forum who would wave that magic wand, be it Nixon, or Bush, or Daddy Bush only...they would take
them in a heartbeat if it made Trump and his jackass friends disappear.
It's not personal, it's not hysteria, it's plain and simple...Donald Trump and the cabal of nimrods who support him are a clear and present danger to the fabric of representative constitutional republican democracy itself. They are well on the way toward making the USA permanently ungovernable.
You're probably a good and sane conservative.
I didn't agree with a lot of what Barry Goldwater put forth but I downright loved the guy, even though I identify as somewhat liberal.
I could be royally pissed off at him and I still believed it would be possible to sit down with him and hammer out some kind of common ground on most issues.
And there hasn't been anyone like him since he left, either...or if there is, please enlighten me.
Anyway, that warning he gave about the Moral Majority and all those preacher types screwing up politics, every single thing he warned about has come to pass.
He was 100% right.
I can't stay pissed at sensible conservatives.
I can be disappointed in them, I can be annoyed at them, I can be frustrated by them but in the end I still usually respect them.
I figure, if you're going to bother to be a liberal, be a good liberal, and if you're going to be a conservative, be a good conservative.
We will figure out a way to show our mutual love for this great country even when we fight like cats and dogs, because at the end of the day
we still remember that what's best for the good of the country is usually what's best for the largest number of people who need us to help them in any way we can.
It's possible to be a conservative or a liberal and not be a jerk about it.
When you're running the country, that's maybe one of the most important things to remember.
I am a conservative but I acknowledge some of the accomplishments of liberalism like civil rights, social security and medicare which conservatives and liberals support now.
Are you conservative on social issues, or closer to the libertarian view?
I really do believe that well grounded conservatives see the usefulness of Social Security and Medicare.
Their current party, as it stands now, however, is telling them, in the most scurrilous manner imaginable, that both these programs threaten all aspects of our national economic security, that they are theft, and that they were founded by communists.
The vast majority of their elected leadership seems to have also decided to either remain silent on civil rights, or to advance the notion that civil rights legislation was a misguided attempt to force political correctness on states and their people by way of curtailment of their deeply held religious beliefs.
There is a lot of work that needs to be done on both Medicare and Social Security. Even as a liberal, I do see the waste, fraud and abuse in both programs, and I know that, if we had the sane conservatives back in power, bipartisan efforts could heal a multitude of sins.
I don't want to see the gravy train of P.T. Barnum style medical quackery continue to grow and scoop up more and more billions in questionable Medicare contracting services, and I know that both parties have people in them who are getting extremely rich off their investments in them.
We can fix the accumulated malaise in both these institutions if we work using patience and care, and use a scalpel instead of a howitzer.
I am conservative on most social issues except abortion and gay rights which I believe should be legal. I don't like using libertarian because i think it has been hijacked by anarchofacists like ron paul who are just far right conservatives. There was a time when libertarians supported abortion rights and gay rights but that time is gone.

When we all became members we chose a leaning, I wanted to see how far which way the entire forum leans? I think its tilting left! lmao
I tried to enter all the forum options but you are limited to 10 poll answers....
It is very obvious that you are purely partisan and have been for your whole 61 years on Earth. You know nothing else. Your opinions carry no weight because they are just the views of an extremist partisan.
Thank you for your opinion.
I voted conservative, but I am no social or religious conservative or even a neo conservative which probably most conservatives fall into those categories today. I am more a Goldwater conservative or perhaps even a traditional conservative. There are many factions of conservatism.
My brand of conservatism certainly does believe in small government. A belief that government should stay out of a citizens private business and lives. Keeping government out of a citizens lives means letting the woman choose when it comes to abortion, letting gays marry if they so wish. This is one area where traditional and religious or social conservatives cross paths.
A traditional conservatives believes in fiscal responsibility. Having spending match revenue. A balanced budget. Spending no more than what one takes in. To get this balance, if that means cutting spending, do it. If it means raising taxes, do it. But a combination of both is usually preferable. Unlike those who call themselves fiscal conservatives whom only believe in low taxes, we believe in fiscal responsibility which is a huge difference.
A traditional conservative also believes the United States ought to keep their nose out of other countries business and only go to war when this nation's security is directly threaten. Then you win that war as quickly as possible using any and all means available. Whatever it takes. If one isn't prepared to do that, then don't go to war.

"Drone warfare is the very worst form of warfare, except for all the other kinds."
---I am betting that I would find a lot of common ground with you, and I identify as a liberal!
But then again, Barry once wrote to Bob Dole, saying, "We're the new liberals of the Republican Party. Can you imagine that?"
That sounds distinctly bipartisan to me, I like it.
I take a lot of flak from my fellow liberals in this area because while I am generally anti-war, if we're attacked, then God bless our military and let's do what needs to be done, provided it is done by a Congressional declaration of war, minus all the "workarounds" and minus all the ideological footballing. We either have the stomach to fight or we don't, and if we do, it's not a business proposition, it's a fight. Used to be weapons were manufactured to fight wars. Now, wars are manufactured to sell weapons.
I do not have the stomach for that because I do not view war as a business.
It's a practical matter, which is also why I refuse to participate in the general liberal outrage over drone warfare.
Sure, drone warfare can be screwed up, lord knows we've bombed far too many wedding parties and hospitals and killed far too many innocents via drones and the blowback is significant.
But you don't blame the concept of drone warfare for that, you levy responsibility on those running the damn thing.
And if they're doing a crap job, get rid of them and get people in there who know what they're doing.
I don't remember who said it but:
I hear all the bickering from the islamist side about how drones are just stiffening their resolve but I only buy about 10 percent of it.
I am convinced that what we're really seeing and hearing is their unwillingness to acknowledge that our drone warfare program is the perfect asymmetrical response to THEIR asymmetrical campaigns, like IED's, suicide bombers, localized terrorism actions, ISIS inspired mass shootings, etc.
Our armies are poorly equipped to combat asymmetrical actions. Their armies are ill equipped to respond to drones.
Drones save us an enormous amount of money, blood and bodies. They are giant flying cans of RAID™ and they "kill bugs dead".
