Yeah, they chose to do it. However, that doesn't mean that the school shouldn't pay their sport related medical bills.
But the college doesn't place them in that position. THEY put themselves in that position. This argument is diffusing the responsibility from the choice of the athlete and is placing it on the college
No it's kind of a perfect comparison. You ever get over exposed to developing chemicals?A bit of a silly comparison, don't you think? Your college classes won't knowingly place you in bodily harm.
Has it really gotten to this in this Nation?
Where people believe the NCAA athletes should be dangling on a limb,
one terrible knee injury away from financial disaster .
No it's kind of a perfect comparison. You ever get over exposed to developing chemicals?
They facilitate a program which, by no mystery, frequently produces injury. His college course, on the other hand, does not.
For a hobby. They don't have to play.
They don't have to play. If it isn't fair they can quit.
The least they could do is not offer scholarships and make them pay tuition and get student loans.
These hobbyists are risking their health at their own digression to participate in their hobby. The fact that the school can off set some costs and provide better education for it's students is not wing in the least.
Well in many schools those athletes are putting asses in seats and eyeballs on TV ads padding the bottom line. Fact is they do get tuition which is a kind of in kind pay, but the basic quid pro quo is still a relationship akin to employer/employee.
Nevertheless, really who cares? Employee or not, they have an independent right to associate with each other.
Maybe they "should" by some moral argument but that doesn't mean that they should be forced to. That's what ACA is for yes?
Should intramural sports cover injury?

And in return for that they get free education and housing.Well in many schools those athletes are putting asses in seats and eyeballs on TV ads padding the bottom line.
Incorrect, the only reason they get a scholarship is because the school makes money on selling tickets to people that with to spectate them playing around.Fact is they do get tuition which is a kind of in kind pay, but the basic quid pro quo is still a relationship akin to employer/employee.
They don't have the right to a paycheck.Nevertheless, really who cares? Employee or not, they have an independent right to associate with each other.
Has it really gotten to this nation that every decision should be paid for by other people?
And in return for that they get free education and housing.
They aren't employees they are consumers. They are welcome to try and get into the major leagues on their own without the college.
They don't have the right to a paycheck.
They don't have to go to school. For some kids, they do have to play, otherwise they wouldn't be able to afford to attend the school.
Yes it is.This isn't just a hobby that people do on the side for fun.
Yep many hobbies are billion dollar enterprises. This is a multi-billion dollar enterprise that is put on the back of these student-athletes.
I disagree. Should implys an opinion, I think they should take care of their problems on their own like everybody else. They aren't special. They should, at the least, have any medical bills that come up from playing these sports taken care of.
That is just an opinion. I think the opportunity to be selected for the pros alone is way more than enough. Tuition and housing is too much. But it is the schools money and they can spend it as they wish. And no, having their tuition and board paid for is just not enough. It just isn't.
I never said they didn't have that right. They also have the right to not play football. And the college. has the right to give them the finger and find people who will do it just for the opportunity and not cater to foot stomping cry babies. They have a right to form the Non-Employee Association of College Athletes for all I care and to bargain for better terms that includes free tuition, housing and 'stipends' if that makes you feel better.
Nobody has a right to a paycheck. This isn't a communist country. You only have the opportunity to earn a paycheck. They don't have a right to a paycheck until they bargain for one, and they can form that association accordingly.
They still aren't employees. And they still don't have the right to apaycheck.. no amount of bargaining will change that. They produce value, if they didn't the colleges needn't bargain, can give scholarships to other students.
I never said they didn't.And they have every right to try to get more.
Yes college athletes should be able to unionize. They are making their schools millions,so they should get a cut.The National Labor Relations Board in Chicago has ruled that football players at Northwestern University are employees and can unionize.
Question is what do you think?
I am not sure what match madness is.I agree, I'd love to see the two teams at the end of March madness to simply refuse to play. I mean how many of those players aren't going pro? Million each......
I agree they should be allowed to unionize, and they get acut, a rather large one.Yes college athletes should be able to unionize. They are making their schools millions,so they should get a cut.

I don't care if they unionize, but people that have everything want more?I think it's ridiculous. If and when they move into pro-football and actually make money, then they can join the NFL union. Until then, they are college students, supposedly there to get an education. Of course, college football has become an entity unto itself, possessing all the power and corruption that goes with it. Personally, I think college football should be relegated back to being an extra-curricular activity that must be earned based on grades and classwork, and not an unofficial draft pool for the NFL.
Unionize. Pfffft. Ludicrous.
