Senator Mike Rounds republican of south dakota on the nashville school shooting. On Wednesday’s “CNN This Morning,” Collins asked Rounds if there would be any legislative action in the wake of the latest mass school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, in which three children and three adults were killed.

There isn’t anybody here (in Congress) that, if they could find the right approach, wouldn’t try to do something because they feel that pain,” Rounds replied.

“And yet when we start talking about bans or challenging on the Second Amendment, I think the things that have already been done have gone about as far as we’re going to with gun control,” the senator added.

“I’m not prepared to start talk about implementing more stuff when we know right now that we could be making schools safer than what they are today, if they had the resources to do so,” he added.

Rounds instead suggested money allocated to putting solar panels in schools could be diverted to increase security.

In other words folks we have money to give to corporate america, a trillion to the military each and every year and monies to send all over the world. Money to protect our kids, nope, we don't have the resources. How lame can one get?

A lot of conservatives have given up on the idea of school safety.

The best they have is bonkers stuff like arming teachers (good luck to those kids in the crossfire).

They are desperately hoping for another big news story to distract from the reality that Republicans, High Defenders of the Children, are totally ok with dead kids if it means they can keep up their fantasies of armed revolt against the federal government.

So Senator Rounds has made it clear that if we want to do anything else towards gun control, we must amend the 2nd amendment.

At least they are being honest.

Why would certain elected reps pass gun control legislation when the NRA pulls their strings….

Which is funny considering people like Senator Mike Rounds are part of the federal government those people want to revolt against.

Money over our children. This is how many will be judged in history

It isnt Congress, or the NRA who is keeping guns in America

It is Americans

We as a whole want our guns. We own over 200m of them. And we arent likely to give them up.

And good luck passing an amendment abolishing the 2nd.....it will NEVER be ratified by the states.

So based on those facts....the question becomes, what do we do?

Identify those with major anger and mental issues....and make sure they never have access to guns. I think EVERYONE can agree to this, but the devil is in the details and implementation. Doctors, nurses, schools, family members need to know they can send in a name and not be held liable. And we need places for these people to go and be checked, to stay and get help if necessary, whether that be for 6 weeks, 6 months, or 6 years.

Once identified those names go on a list and anyone providing them a gun, or selling them a gun faces a 25 year mandatory federal sentence. That includes FAMILY and friends.

All gun sales must be registered with the state.....private sales and all. If you sell a gun to a family member, or gift a weapon, and the gun has a serial number, there should be a simple 5 minute online item that you can post telling the state you no longer have the weapon. Older weapons without a serial number this doesnt need to happen.

Just a couple of ideas on what could work.....

Do you think the Congressional Democrats will/should willingly take money from the CHIPS Act and redirect it to schools so they can make their children safer?

(You DID mention "corporate america"...right?)

Yeah, it's totally bonkers for a responsible adult to be armed for protection 🙄

The same adults that conservatives can't trust to assign books for book reports without some committee overseeing it?

Your claim of trust rings hollow here.

Just because a lot of teachers are corrupt leftists doesn't mean I think they are going to shoot kids if they carry a gun. Your logic is idiotic.

You should review the definition of the term "crossfire" and try again.

So take away money from an investment that would save on energy bills to make schools more like a prison. Makes a lot of sense. What a dunce.

Solar panels installed at seven schools would end up offsetting up to 91 percent of electric usage per school, saving them about $130,000 a year, and $9.5 million over 35 years.

No the second amendment won't be changed. Now.

It will when all those children who grew up being scared to go to school because of guns. They've seen their friends and teachers blown to bits from guns and are learning to hate them.

We are teaching the next generations to hate guns and the second amendment.

Children aren't stupid, they know adults won't do a damn thing to keep them safe.

When they are old enough to vote, they will vote for politicians who will change the second amendment.

A lot of them are old enough now. When more are old enough and old people who are alive now are dead, the second amendment will be either repealed completely or changed.

That will be the result of the selfishness of adults now. Adults now are too selfish to put human lives and children before their guns.

If the gun nuts want to preserve the second amendment for future generations, they will advocate for effective and responsible gun safety laws.

The gun nuts are too selfish to do that.

And giving them up need not ever become an issue for those who already own guns. But making it much tougher for new gun owners to acquire them; demanding comprehensive background checks; mental health checks; instituting waiting periods; enabling the removal of guns from homes with records of domestic abuse; observing age limits; full registration of firearms; safety training; and perhaps a dozen other sane appropriate restrictions, we can allow all law abiding gun owners to keep their guns, while still putting the squeeze on the impulse buyer nut-cases, reducing not only mass shootings, but all gun violence including suicides and accidental shootings.

Gun deaths are not going to go away anytime soon - but by infusing some sanity into how we regulate them, and addressing the mental health of Americans, in time, the number of accidents and mass shootings will begin to decline.

We can take the money we use to subsidize say the oil and gas industries, big pharma, big farming, big ranching and on and on and use that?

What's sad to me is that people are more concerned about their guns than their kids or anyone else for that matter. Why do we all need to be mindful about getting shot no matter where we seem to be, like home in bed asleep? We are all being held hostage to gun owners. I'm sick of hearing about gun owners rights when their rights kill so many people. It's time to amend the second amendment and stop america from being one big killing field.

If it weren't for taxes and all the other charges a city puts on their bills for us customers, my solar panels, and I do not have a big array, have cut my costs by a good ninety percent. On a daily basis I am in general ninety nine percent grid usage free. Also I live in florida where it's already in the eighties soon to be nineties, like next week soon, so my air runs 24/7.

And here, you illustrate what Congress is going through. You mention corporate America...I mention CHIPS...and you mention the above.

Just as you and I won't come to an agreement, neither will Congress.

What's sad to me is that people are more concerned about their guns than their kids or anyone else for that matter. We are not being held hostage by "gun owners". We are being held hostage by mentally ill people...which is exasperated by an ailing society.

You would be better served by dealing with those two issues than attempting to amend the 2nd Amendment.

btw, "one big killing field" is your usual hyperbole at its finest. Just saying...
