“Senate Republicans are warning that they no longer view former President Trump as the leader of the party amid growing signs that they are ready to turn the page after a chaotic four years.

The shifting underscores how Trump's actions have deeply fractured Senate Republicans in the wake of Jan. 6, with GOP senators saying Trump shouldn’t feel vindicated just because he was acquitted of inciting an insurrection.

The president has very badly damaged his reputation. ... He’ll be remembered throughout history as the president who resorted to nonlegal steps to try to hold on to power,” Sen. Pat Toomey (Pa.), one of the seven GOP senators, said.
“There’s no way. You can’t defend much of what happened in the last almost three months since the Nov. 3 election,” Thune said”

the acquittal was meaningless, the trial brought a very bright light on a man who sought to overthrow the US government and fractured his own party. The lives lost, the chaos and confusion he brought to this country was all for nothing.

A very sad commentary on a former President of the United State.

Hah!
If that were true, so many would not feel that they absolutely had to acquit if they wanted to win re-election. Trump carries their* souls in his pocket.

I am in the "actions speak louder than words" camp.

I guess that’s why so many Republican Senators were hiding when Face the Nation came calling for comment.

No doubt the Republicans are cowards. Now they have a gigantic mess that they have to clean up. All they needed to do was vote against that lunatic.

We clearly reap what we sow, here is the seeds of insanity

Meh. It will come down to placating to the more stupid of their constituents or not. So far, they continue to demonstrate that they are petrified of Trump Nation. Look how McConnel handled it:

1) He declared that Trump is responsible for inciting the attack.
2) He then pushed the hearing off until after Trump left Office.
3) He then argued that it was too late because he left Office.

This is cowardice. But that's the joke, right? The GOP created this mass of ignorance across the nation. They paved the way for a Trump. And they spent four years kowtowing to the traitor because their mob proved far too stupid to recognize bold treachery and simple treason when it reared its ugly head.

- A National Security Advisor felt that he needed to lie about secret meetings with Russians in 2016?
- Revealing classified information to Russia in 2017?
- Defended Russia against America in 2018?
- Asked a foreign government to help him win re-election in 2019?
- Incited Trump Nation to attack America in 2021?

And what did the mass of Republicans and conservatives do? They shrugged every single time. Thus, the acquittal was not meaningless. It was an indictment of every single Republican who approved of this behavior as allowable for future Presidents. If a Democrat pulls this in the future, they will be sure to call it treason. But make no mistake. They have Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon (resigned before), and now Donald Trump in their conservative history. They are the only ones who seem to tap into such treachery and betrayal at the White House level. If they, especially McConnell, wanted to be sincere about a GOP shift, not just from modern history but all of their conservative history, they should have declared it by impeaching Trump.

Republican Party = cowards

I'm sure most Senate Republicans WANT the memory of Trump to go away. Not going to magically happen. Trump will not got quietly into the night.

Given that the Senate GOP largely just endorsed Trump's insurrection attempt, I don't think "turning the page" is an option.
There was no attempted insurrection. Since a lot of the left seems to be living in a bubble where they actually believe a legit putsch occurred then maybe there needs to be talk of deprogramming leftists of their cult indoctrination.

Republican Party = cowards

They are a clearly a coven of snakes. They even betray each other by denigrating their own as "rinos" if they dare put conservatism above Party agenda. Note that Democrat don't denigrate their own if they dare express opinions contrary to the line. Republicans exist on a plain where they are petrified of being cast out by their own or cast out by their own voters who have been taught to pander to nonsense conspiracies as a belief system. All the extremists and quacks are in the GOP and they are allowed to speak for the Party.

The way I see it, Trump's magic bubble popped on 1/6. I'm surprised we didn't all hear it.

He ripped his pants with the "normal" GOP by whipping up the idiots and failing to reign them in when things went too far.

And he outright betrayed his true believers by turning on them after the fact Bay of Pigs style.

Everything since has just been hangover and denial.

You clearly did not see what happened on Jan. 6th, I can only guess that you do not see a failed insurrection as a crime. I can only believe that you wanted it to succeed,

Clear deflection.

Get off your knees, remove the Trump altar, and then maybe you can use the words 'cult' or 'bubble' without the vast majority of America laughing at you.

While you are at it, ask somebody to help you understand conservatism. Conservatism is not Trump. The man dared you to open a dictionary for four years and you still choose to remain on your knees.

I saw what happened.
But I saw what actually happened and not a delusion of it.

Some people clearly never want to admit they were wrong, so they keep doubling down with the excuses. Digging the hole deeper and deeper.

I will not be lectured by a Globohomo leftist as to what conservative means.

Funny how the "very conservative" are the most hopeless of them. They confuse their idea of conservatism with far-Right or alt-Right instincts, where Trump made them feel comfortable about themselves.

Blah blah blah blah.
No arguments by you.

Trump was very good at telling them that their failures in life were not their fault. Instead, globalist, elites, affirmation action, illegal immigration, etc. were to blame and only he was looking out for them.

Ah..."globohomo" is an alt-Right's term. Apparently you aren't aware that the alt-Right considers Trump a traitor to your cause now.

And you will be lectured. As a person who appreciates education and a ****ing book, I have an obligation to lift you from your sad little slumber. The Founding Fathers said so.

Or you can ask a High School student to hand you a political science text book. Conservatism is more than worshipping an anti-conservative thesis in Trump and wearing a white hooded cloak.

Blah blah blah blah.
No arguments by you.

You respond with "blah, blah, blah" and then say I have no argument? Shall I define irony for you too? Bad enough you don't understand deflection and conservatism.

And you sad little alt-Right members can't understand why the more intelligent always get the better of you.

very true

This sounds like Germany at the beginning of a very dark period in the world’s history.
