"I do not think we should accept it as 'normal' in our society that billionaires get massive tax breaks while teachers in this country have to work a second job just to make ends meet," said the senator.

You tell 'em, Bernie!

Teachers should get similar pay to pediatricians. They spend more time with the children and dedicate their lives to caring for them. It only would make sense that we value them similarly. Besides, the teacher shortage is proof that our system isn't working.

Teachers should be held in high regard both as a profession and a societal service. The way they are treated in many states is unconscionable and as far as I am concerned is a major contributor to the pitiful state of education. Americans just don't seem to truly appreciate education and that is why much is as it is .

Teachers are systematically disrespected by society, disproportionately by the Right. They should earn their fair share, which should be a LOT more than they do now.

The vast majority of educators and school personnel who work with our kids are saints, but they shouldn't have to take a vow of poverty.

I agree with the idea that teachers need to be respected with more pay , etc................but I disagree that education is in a pitiful state..........

GOOD teachers should absolutely be paid more.

I work in HR for a school system.

We do OK with pay and benefits. I do turnover reports for the Executive Director and HR Managers and of course attend department meetings where teacher recruitment is an issue, but the bigger problem is teacher retention. If you hire for a position and don't have to fill it for 10-15 years you are in a better place then having to fill it over and over again over that same time period.

Regardless of pay it's the lack of respect from parents, the lack of respect from students and the lack of support in maintaining classroom discipline as a climate problem that drives people out of the profession.

The of course laymen just don't understand how much work and stress new teachers are under for the first 4-6 years as they get experience and their feet under them.
